Women's Basketball Falls to Binghamton, 59-55

VESTAL, N.Y. - Junior Christine Kinneary scored nine points in the final five minutes and classmate Kristi Dini nailed a long trey with two minutes remaining to give the Boston University women's basketball team a one-point lead, however, it was not enough as Binghamton came back to win, 59-55, at the Events Center on Saturday afternoon. The Terriers fall to 8-7 overall and 1-1 in AE play, while the Bearcats improve 3-11 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
BU featured three players in double figures, with sophomore Aly Hinton leading with 12 points and six rebounds. She was followed by junior Jesyka Burks-Wiley and Kinneary with 11 apiece. Kinneary earned America East Player of the Game honors for her efforts down the stretch. Kinneary dished out five assists, collected five rebounds and scored nine of the Terriers final 14 points.
In a game that saw 12 lead changes - including four in the final 2:22 - BU was out-rebounded 46-33 and Binghamton held the 20-14 advantage in second-chance points. The Terriers did capitalize on 16 Bearcat miscues, posting 17 points off turnovers. BU shot 33.3 percent for the game.
In a low-scoring first half, BU took its first lead, 7-6, at 12:46 of a jumper by Burks-Wiley. However, the Bearcats reclaimed the advantage on a quick 9-0 spurt to push their lead to 15-9. Burks-Wiley ended the scoring drought when she drained a 3-pointer at 9:46 and the squad responded by drawing to within one at 8:02. Less than two minutes later Raffo put the Terriers back on top with a trey.
Another run by the Bearcats put them back up, 27-22, however, Raffo cut the deficit to three points with 1:20 remaining in the half. Laura Franceski scored six of Binghamton's last eight points to close out the scoring at 29-24 at the break.
At the break, Burks-Wiley was the team's leading scorer with nine points and three rebounds. The Terriers shot 30 percent in the stanza and were out-rebounded, 27-15.
The Terriers started the second half strong, scoring eight consecutive points within the first 1:32 to reclaim the lead, 32-29. The Bearcats did not crumple, however, as they rallied to retake it, 35-34, at 14:49.
After the Terriers briefly enjoyed a one-point lead, Binghamton went on an 11-2 run to go up by six with 7:50 remaining in regulation. Kinneary came on strong within the final six minutes and with four consecutive baskets drew the Terriers to within one. Junior Kristi Dini put the Terriers up by one with a long trey at 2:01. In a furious rush to the finish, the Bearcats nailed a jumper inside one minute, hit 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch and closed out the scoring at 59-55.
BU will return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 19 when it hosts Stony Brook at 1:00 p.m. at Case Gym.
