CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - After leading the Boston University field hockey team to a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory at New Hampshire in its conference opener, freshman Giovanna Monaco has been named the America East Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.
Monaco scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 61st minute, to help the Terriers erase an early 2-0 deficit and win their America East opener for the fifth straight season.
The Terriers got on the board in the 25th minute when senior Sheena Berry directed a rebound towards Monaco, who knocked a shot to the boards from the middle of the circle.
After senior Holly Wiles tied the game at 53:14, Monaco sent BU home a winner when she picked up a rebound from a saved shot by junior Allie Dolce and knocked in a shot through traffic at the 60:12 mark.
Through 12 games, Monaco is tied with junior Nikki Lloyd for the team lead in both goals (3) and points (6). Two of her three tallies have been game-winners.
Monaco and the Terriers will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 11) when they play host to Fairfield for an America East contest beginning at 3 p.m.
