Iowa City, Iowa - The Boston University women's basketball team (2-1) suffered an 83-58 setback to Iowa (2-1) on Saturday afternoon at the KCRG-TV9 Hawkeye Challenge. Senior Jesyka Burks-Wiley led the Terriers with a 19-point performance and classmate Christine Kinneary chipped in 13 points.
Senior Kristi Dini also reached double digits with 10 points on 3-for-12 field-goal shooting and 1-for-1 free-throw shooting. As a team, BU forced 22 turnovers and converted on 23 points off those miscues. The Terriers were 9-for-10 from the charity stripe and posted eight points on fast breaks.
The Terriers and Hawkeyes battled back and forth in the opening minutes of the contest, but Iowa went up by nine, 18-9, following back-to-back jumpers from senior center Megan Skouby and a trey from senior Kristi Smith. Junior Aly Hinton came back to knock down a jumper and stop the Hawkeyes' run. Iowa took another nine-point advantage, 31-13, with 5:41 remaining in the stanza but senior Amarachi Umez-Eronini broke up the Terriers' three-minute scoring drought with a jumper on the opposite end of the court.
Burks-Wiley attempted a BU rally late in the stanza, knocking down back-to-back treys and a jumper, but Iowa closed out the half scoring 10 unanswered points to take a 47-25 lead into the locker rooms at halftime.
In the second half, BU came out strong with Kinneary and sophomore Kerry Cashman making quick jumpers and Dini draining back-to-back treys. On the second 3-pointer she drew a foul and converted on the four-point play and bring the score to 54-38.
An 18-6 BU run helped the squad cut the deficit to 14 points, 61-47, with 13 minutes remaining in the contest and a three-point play from Kinneary a minute later brought BU to within 11. However, Iowa closed out the game outscoring BU 22-8 to claim the 83-58 victory.
