IOWA CITY, Iowa - Paced by senior Sheena Berry's first goal of the year and a shutout effort from sophomore goalkeeper Kim Kastuk, the Boston University field hockey team ended a three-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over Central Michigan on Saturday afternoon at Iowa's Grant Field.
The Terriers improved to 3-4 on the year, while Central Michigan dropped to 1-5.
BU overcame a slow start, as the Chippewas held a 5-1 shot advantage and a 6-1 corner advantage after the opening half.
"While we were disappointed with our overall team effort, our corner defense made the difference today." said head coach Sally Starr.
Berry scored the game's lone goal just 3:20 into the second half, driving home a shot from 10 yards out for her first goal in a Terrier uniform.
The Chippewas had chances to tie it down the stretch, but the Terrier defense hung on to earn its third win via shutout this season.
"Central Michigan competed very hard and certainly deserved a different result," added Starr. "However, [junior] Gabby Hajjar was relentless for us today. She overcame sickness and her heart and leadership led us to the win."
Central Michigan outshot BU, 11-8, and doubled up the Terriers in corners, 10-5.
Kastuk made two saves on the afternoon, while CMU's Melinda Curran recorded four saves in a losing effort.
In addition to her goal, Berry made a pair of defensive saves to keep the Chippewas off the board. Sophomore Maryette Stuart added her second defensive save in as many games.
The Terriers will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 21) when they take on sixth-ranked Iowa at 2 p.m. EST.
