BOSTON - Boston University head coach Liz Robertshaw has announced that five newcomers will join the five-time defending America East champion lacrosse team this fall. Attackers Danielle Etrasco and Rachel Friedman, midfielder Kristen Mogavero, defender Monica Baumgartner and goalkeeper Kim Elsworth comprise the class of 2013, joining the Terriers from across the Eastern seaboard.
"Our staff is extremely excited about this year's incoming freshman class," said Robertshaw, the America East Coach of the Year. "We feel this is a high-energy group of players who know the game, know what we expect from our student-athletes and are excited to become a part of the tradition that is BU lacrosse. The addition of Monica, Kim, Danielle, Rachel, Kristen and their families is something we have been looking forward to since starting the recruiting process with them."
Etrasco played at Massapequa High School in Massapequa, N.Y., where she was a US Lacrosse All-American her senior season after earning honorable mention All-America honors as a junior. She is also a three-time all-county and two-time All-Long Island selection and played for the New York 1 club team that competed at the national tournament as well as the Liberty Lacrosse club team.
Mogavero was teammates with Etrasco at Massapequa High School and on the Liberty Lacrosse club team. She was a team captain as a senior and earned all-county honors after being tabbed for honorable mention the previous season. Mogavero also played field hockey at Massapequa.
Friedman is from Fairfield, Conn., where she was a first-team all-state selection at Fairfield Warde High School. Friedman graduated from Warde with a school-record 219 career goals, including 109 goals in a senior season that earned her first-team all-conference and Connecticut Post All-Star honors for the second year in a row. She was a member of the club team NewLax. Friedman was also an all-conference basketball player and helped her team capture a conference championship as a senior.
Baumgartner is a familiar name for BU lacrosse fans, as her older sister Erica will be a senior attack this spring. Monica will join the Terriers after two years as captain at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, where she earned player of the year honors from the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference and the Montgomery County Gazette. The Silver Spring, Md., native was a US Lacrosse All-American as a junior and also excelled as an all-conference field hockey player in high school. She was a member of the M&D club team.
Elsworth became a starter for her team at Shenendehowa High School as a freshman and also played between the pipes for the New York Adirondack Empire team that won the national tournament championship in 2007. She was twice selected as a Section II All-Star and helped her team to the Section II championship game as a freshman. A native of Ballston Lake, N.Y., Elsworth played for the Albany Elite club team and also won a state championship in soccer.
The quintet of recruits will join a BU squad that went 15-4 and captured its fifth straight America East title and NCAA tournament berth in 2009, finishing the year ranked 11th in the nation in the IWLCA coaches' poll.
