BOSTON – Former Boston University women’s lacrosse All-American Kelly Munroe was hired as an assistant coach at American University, the Eagles’ athletic department announced today. A standout defender during her playing career, Munroe will work primarily with the defensive unit in her role as assistant. The 2009 graduate joins classmate Sarah Dalton and Lindsay Lewis ’06 as the third former Terrier to assume a collegiate coaching role this offseason.
“I am thrilled to see Kelly join the collegiate coaching profession,” said BU women’s lacrosse head coach Liz Robertshaw. “She has a good knowledge of the game, her work ethic is fantastic and she is a great teacher. I think she's going to have an immediate impact on the American lacrosse team.”
Munroe capped a solid four-year career with a strong senior season in which she assumed the role of captain and led her team to its fifth straight America East Conference title. Munroe played a key role in BU recording its second-straight perfect conference season and joined teammates Dalton, McKinley Curro and Corcoran Downey on the All-Tournament team.
Aside from garnering All-American accolades as a senior, the Westwood, Mass., native was named to the All-Region squad as a junior and a senior, the All-Conference team from her sophomore year on and was dubbed Most Outstanding Player in the 2008 America East tournament. Munroe also compiled 61 caused turnovers in her career with BU, good for 12th on the all-time list.
Munroe was recently selected to her second stint with the United States Lacrosse Developmental Team, joining Dalton and Curro as part of a strong BU contingent on the roster. The team will see its first action on Oct. 11, 2009 at the fourth-annual U.S. Lacrosse Stars and Stripes event, held in Alexandria, Va.
