BOSTON - After hiring Georgetown head coach Ricky Fried as the new head coach of the national team in July, the U.S. Lacrosse Women's Division Board of Governors announced the hiring of Boston University women's lacrosse head coach Liz Robertshaw as an assistant coach for the U.S. Women's National Elite Lacrosse team. Robertshaw joins Stanford head coach Amy Bokker and former U.S. National Team standout Jessica Wilk Strosberg as an assistant for the defending World Cup champion U.S. squad. Wendy Stone will serve as the team manager.
"I am thrilled to be given this opportunity to work within the U.S. Lacrosse National Team," said Robertshaw. "It is exciting to think of working alongside great coaches like Ricky, Amy and Jess, in addition to being surrounded by some of the best players in the world."
"We're proud to congratulate Liz on her appointment to the coaching staff of the U.S. national team," Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Mike Lynch said. "She is a talented coach whose hard work has earned her this opportunity, which in turn will provide her with additional experience and will generate valuable national exposure for our women's lacrosse program."
Fried took over the head coaching duties after serving as an assistant for the 2009 U.S. squad that took home Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup title.
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with Liz, Amy, Jess and Wendy," said Fried. "I respect them so much. They each bring a tremendous amount of integrity, as well as collegiate and international experience. I look forward to working collaboratively with them to get the most out of each player and to help make their experience a positive one."
2009 was a banner year for Robertshaw and the BU women's lacrosse team as the Terriers notched their second straight perfect conference season and fifth straight America East title. Robertshaw garnered America East Coach of the Year honors and, after leading BU to a 15-4 mark in 2009, has a 46-13 overall record in just three seasons as the BU head coach. Robertshaw was also tabbed to coach the North team in the annual IWLCA/Under Armour Division I North-South Senior All-Star Game. The conference title gave the Terriers their seventh NCAA tournament berth in program history and the team ended the 2009 season ranked No. 11 in the nation.
Robertshaw took over head coach duties at BU in the fall of 2006 after spending three years as the Terriers' top assistant. Prior to her arrival in Boston, Robertshaw worked with the goalies and defense at Brown where she served as an assistant from 2000-2003. Her coaching career began at her alma mater, George Mason, where she served as an assistant from 1998-1999. Robertshaw was a two-time captain during her playing days and became the first player in program history to receive All-America honors, receiving the recognition after her junior and senior seasons. An English major at George Mason, Robertshaw was also a four-time All-Conference selection and received the Aimee Willard Award as the best collegiate player at the U.S. Lacrosse National Tournament in 1998.
Robertshaw joins a program that has enjoyed great success in international competition. The U.S. women's team captured the 2009 World Cup title, downing Australia 8-7 in the finals, held in Prague, Czech Republic. The win marks the sixth world championship for the U.S. women, having captured four straight World Cup titles from 1989-2001 and the inaugural title in 1982. Robertshaw will stay with the team through the 2013 World Cup competition.
