BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Four Terriers reached double figures as the Boston University women's basketball team (2-3) defeated Colgate (2-4), 78-56, on Friday on the first night of the LIU Turkey Classic. Sophomore Chantell Alford scored a team-high 19 points to reach her 500th career point. BU advances to the tourney finals as it will take on host LIU at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Alford went 8-for-15 from the field and 3-for-7 from behind the arc as she reached 500 career points in just her second season with the Terriers. Junior Alex Young added 16 points with four treys, while junior Caroline Stewart and senior Kerry Cashman chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively. Cashman also hauled in nine boards with three steals and three blocks.
As a team, BU shot 39.1 percent from the field and a season-high 73.3 percent from the free-throw line. The Terriers scored 22 points off turnovers, forcing Colgate into 19 miscues, while turning the ball over just six times themselves - its lowest since UNH on Feb. 28, 2010 (6 TOs).
An 11-3 run in the early going of the first stanza gave BU a 15-7 advantage heading into the first media timeout at 13:02 during which time Stewart contributed six of her eight first-half points. After Colgate reached as close as three points at 8:31, 17-14, BU scored seven quick points to bring it right back up to an eight-point advantage, 24-16, with 6:22 remaining.
It continued to stretch its lead and it reached a double-figure advantage by the 3:08 mark - and never dipped back below - when Alford nailed a trey from the corner to take a 32-21 lead. Outscoring the Red Raiders, 7-0, to close out the stanza, BU took a 15-point lead into the locker rooms at halftime, 39-24.
The key to the first half for the Terriers was that they forced nine turnovers and scored 13 points off those miscues, while also using their up-tempo game to score six points on the fastbreak and 18 points in the paint.
In the second half, BU separated itself from Colgate even more building an impressive 24-point lead, 60-36, at 10:31. It was backed by good free-throw shooting from Cashman and Stewart, who combined to go 8-for-10 during the seven-minute span it took to build the insurmountable lead. BU maintained its 20-point advantage throughout the remainder of the game as it went on to win by 22 points.
NOTES: Young reached double-figure scoring for the 15th straight game and has hit a trey in each of the last 13 consecutive games.
Alford reached 500 career points with her 19-point performance, becoming the youngest Terrier since Aly Hinton ('10) to surpass the 500-point milestone as a sophomore. Hinton did it during the 2007-08 campaign.
Stewart's 13 points was a season high.
Freshman Rashidat Agboola scored her first career points, and junior Kasie Carbacio brought in her first two career rebounds, dished out an assist and earned one steal.
