ALLSTON, Mass. - Aided by an 11-run first inning, the Boston University softball team (11-10) went on to claim a 14-8 victory over crosstown rival Harvard (4-13) on Thursday afternoon at Soldiers Field. Senior Rachel Moeller led the way with three hits and three RBIs, while classmate Rachel Hebert and junior April Setterlund added two hits apiece.
Setterlund was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two walks, while Hebert was 2-for-4 with one RBI and one stolen base. Freshman Taylor Cowan drove in three runs on one home run. Seniors Cassidi Hardy and Megan Currier shared pitching duties, with Currier picking up the win in four innings pitched, two strikeouts and one earned run.
The Terriers had a big first inning, after loading the bases on a single, an error and a walk, before junior Caitlin Rentler drew another walk to drive in Hebert. The Terriers followed with a two-run double from Moeller, before Cowan came next with a home run to left field to clear the bases and give the Terriers a 6-0 lead with no outs in the first frame.
Sophomore Emily Roesch added another after taking advantage of a fielding error and coming home from second. Freshman Whitney Tuthill scored on an illegal pitch to make it an 8-0 game. BU continued to tack on the runs as junior Christina Valdes scored when Hebert singled to right field and she then came home on an illegal pitch. After going through the lineup, Moeller got up for the second time in the inning and ripped a single to left field with the bases loaded to plate sophomore Erica Casacci.
In the bottom half of the frame, Harvard put one up on the board when Whitney Shaw hit a sacrifice fly out to center field. In the second, BU went up 13-1 when Valdes and Casacci scored on an error and a fielder's choice, respectively.
In the bottom of the third, Harvard came back with six runs on two home runs and a single to cut the deficit to six runs, 13-8. The Crimson continued to chip away at the lead, putting another up on the board in the fourth on an RBI single to right field.
In the top of the sixth, BU scored one run on a Setterlund double to center field, which plated Hebert and made it a 14-8 game.
The Terriers will host Holy Cross in a doubleheader on Saturday (March 27) and Dartmouth on Sunday (March 28).
