BALTIMORE, Md. - The Boston University softball team split its doubleheader with UMBC on Saturday afternoon to move to 22-15 overall and 6-2 in the America East, while the Retrievers are 21-17 and 2-5 in league play. Junior April Setterlund and sophomore Emily Roesch led the way with four and three hits, respectively, while senior Rachel Hebert drove in a team-high four runs and tied Setterlund's single-game school record with two homers in game two.
Through two games, Setterlund batted .800 on 4-for-5 hitting, while Roesch hit .500 with two RBIs. Junior Christina Valdes, Hebert, sophomore Erica Casacci and senior Rachel Moeller also recorded multiple hits, with Valdes driving in three runners off her second home run of the season. Hebert hit for power on Saturday with two home runs and four RBIs, while Setterlund recorded her 14th double of the season.
In the circle, senior Cassidi Hardy was charged with the loss in game one, as she surrendered three runs on five hits; however, she struck out a career-high 13 batters in the complete game effort and did not issue one walk. Her 13 Ks pushed her career total to 706 and she is now just one of two BU hurlers in the history of the program to throw over 700 strikeouts. Rookie Whitney Tuthill earned the win in game two, allowing three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
In game one, BU struck first with one run in the fourth as freshman Taylor Cowan's RBI single plated Setterlund, who had reached on a double. The Retrievers responded with three unanswered runs in the fourth and seventh innings, respectively. The home squad tied the game on a solo home run in the fourth, then took the contest with a walk-off two-run home run off the bat of Amanda Page.
Following the pitcher's duel in game one, the Terriers bats came alive in game two with 11 runs off 13 hits, including two home runs from Hebert. Both teams scored in the first with the Terriers putting one on the scoreboard off an RBI single from Moeller.
BU went up 4-1 in the second as Hebert went deep to center field to plate three runs and then in the next inning she struck again - this time with a solo shot to left center.
The fourth inning proved to be the highest scoring frame of the game, as the Terriers brought six runs home, highlighted by a three-run blast off the bat of Valdes. Roesch also went deep in the inning, clearing the bases and bringing two home.
UMBC plated two more over the fourth and fifth; however, it was not enough to rally as the Terriers took the eight-run victory in five innings.
BU and UMBC will face off in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m.
