The Boston University women’s lacrosse team will welcome seven newcomers to the squad’s 2013 roster, head coach Liz Robertshaw announced on Tuesday afternoon. The class of 2016 joins 18 returners from last year’s team that captured the America East regular season championship.
The additions include Ally Adams, Louisa del Rio, Jill Horka, Remy Nolan, Sofia Robins, Brittany Tarantino and Jenny Thompson.
“I am excited about the BU Class of 2016 because they bring in a new dynamic to the team being primarily middies from solid programs,” said Robertshaw. “Throughout the recruiting process each one was well aware of what we as a program are looking to do and where they would potentially fit in, and to date they have come ready to make that happen. I’m eager to see how much of an impact this class can make and how they can help the 2013 BU lacrosse team”
Ally Adams (5-8 • M • Severna Park, Md. • Severna Park)
Served as captain at Severna Park as a senior and helped lead the team to three state championships … Three-time Anne Arundel All-County honoree … Named Academic All-American as a junior and senior … Also an All-County field hockey player for state championship team … Member of the National Honor Society… Was a member of SP Lax Lacrosse Club
Robertshaw on Adams: Ally is a stellar athlete who can play both ends of the field for us at midfield. She’s got a workers mentality that I think is going to help push those around her every day.
Louisa del Rio (5-6 • MA • South Hamilton, Mass. • Pingree School)
Played two seasons at Hamilton Wenham before transferring to Pingree ... Served as team captain as a senior … Led Pingree to back-to-back conference championships … Two-time Cape Ann League All-Star … Led team in goals and assists as a junior while earning All-League EIL honors …Three-time Salem News All-Scholastic honoree ... Four-year honor roll student … Was a member of Synergy Lacrosse Club
Robertshaw on del Rio: Louisa is a smart middie-attacker who possesses the ability to challenge and feed both from the point and from X which makes her a threat in our attacking system. Louisa’s got speed and an eye for the cage that I think is going to make us better.
Jill Horka (5-6 • MD • Westborough, Mass. • Westborough) Led Westborough to three district championships … Three-time Midland Wachusett League All-Star … Received the Twelve Season Athlete Award and Athletic Director’s Award … Also played soccer and ran track … Was a member of Central Massachusetts Select Lacrosse Club
Robertshaw on Horka: Jill is a total workhorse on the field. She brings a tough nosed style of play to the middie-defense position and I think she’s going to have a big impact on making both ends of the field better.
Remy Nolan (5-5 • D • Westport, Conn. • Staples) Played three seasons at Staples, serving as captain as a senior ... Named Second Team All-FCIAC as a junior and First Team All-FCIAC as a senior ... Earned First Team All-State honors as a senior ... Captained the basketball team and was a two-time All-FCIAC Honorable Mention honoree ... Also played field hockey and ran cross country …Was a member of NewLax Lacrosse Club
Robertshaw on Nolan: Remy is a scrappy defender who has an ability to come up with 50/50 balls in the defensive end and make solid 1v1 plays all over the field. She’s going to fit in well with our aggressive style of defense at BU.
Sofia Robins (5-6 • MD • Stevenson, Md. • McDonough School)
Member of the U19 Canadian team that won bronze at the 2011 World Championship… Played for McDonough, which was ranked as the top high school team in the nation during her junior and senior seasons … Led team to back-to-back IAAM Championships … Also member of swimming team that won two IAAM Championships … Named to the Academic Honor Roll…Played for the M&D Lacrosse Club
Robertshaw on Robins: Sofia is a smart middie-defender from a strong program who I think will come in and immediately find success in our style of play. Some of her strengths that we want to use in our system are her willingness to takes risks on the field, ability to read the game well and she is a quick learner.
Brittany Tarantino (5-3 • D • Ho Ho Kus, N.J. • Immaculate Heart Academy)
Served as team captain as a senior … Four-time All-Country honoree … Named to First Team All-League and First Team Northern New Jersey as a senior … Also played soccer and basketball … Member of the National Society of High School Scholars….Was a member of the Metro Lacrosse Club Program
Robertshaw on Tarantino: Brittany is a feisty 1v1 defender whose presence is bigger than her 5’3 stature. She has the ability to come up with a big play on one end of the field and finish the ball on the other.
Jenny Thompson (5-9 • MA • Londonderry, N.H. • Londonderry)
Named a U.S. Lacrosse First Team All-American as a junior and senior … Earned ESPN High School All-American honorable mention honors … Named Team Offensive Player of the Year as a sophomore, Team MVP as a junior and received Coaches Award as a senior ... Member of the Upper New England WDNT team ... Received New Hampshire Division I Coaches Offensive Player of the Year award as a senior … Also played soccer for two seasons….Played for the Granite State Elite Lacrosse Club
Robertshaw on Thompson: Jenny comes to us after a strong playing career and her ability to produce on the field in those situations is what we want to capitalize here at BU. Her height, presence and work off the draw are things we are going to look to Jenny for in boosting our midfield unit.
