Field Hockey Ranked 7th in First NCAA RPI Release

BOSTON - The first official NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) for field hockey was released this week, and Boston University came in at No. 7 among the nation's 79 Division I programs. The ratings do not include the Terriers' victory over Massachusetts on Tuesday.
RPI is a critical factor in determining at-large bids to the NCAA tournament. This season, the Terriers' only chance to get in to the NCAAs is an at-large berth due to the fact they are ineligible for the America East Championship. That ruling was issued this summer after BU announced it would be moving to the Patriot League next year.
BU is 6-2 this season following its double-overtime triumph at UMass. The Terriers matched the best start in program history with five straight wins (Delaware, Rutgers, Providence, Kent State, Boston College) to start the season.
Looking ahead, the Terriers will host three teams in the top eight of the RPI in the coming weeks, beginning with Virginia (8th) this Sunday (Sept. 23) at Jordan Field. BU will also face UConn (1st) and Northeastern (3rd) on Sept. 30 and Oct. 21, respectively.
