CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Freshman Hester van der Laan of the Boston University field hockey team has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
The rookie midfielder had a hand in all three goals on Friday to lead the Terriers to a 3-1 victory over California at New Balance Field.
BU scored three goals against the Bears in a span of 3:33 to jump out to a 3-0 lead by the 18th minute. Van der Laan used direct inserts on corners to set up goals by senior Ysi Schieb and sophomore Sofi Laurito before scoring on her own off a penalty stroke at the 17:29 mark.
For the season, van der Laan ranks third on the team in points with 13 on four goals and 15 assists. Her assist total is good for second on the squad, trailing only Schieb.
She is the third BU freshman to earn the weekly rookie honor from the Patriot League this season, joining Amanda Cassera and Ellie Landsman.
The Terriers will return to action on Saturday (Nov. 2) when they close out the regular season with a home contest against Lafayette. Game time is set for noon.
