VESTAL, N.Y. – Behind double-digit scoring performances from five players, the Boston University women’s basketball team defeated Binghamton, 73-51, Saturday afternoon at Binghamton’s Event Center. The victory gives BU 20 wins on the season, as the Terriers improve to 20-4 on the season and 10-1 in America East action.
This marks the second straight season that BU has recorded at least 20 victories and the fourth time under ninth-year head coach Kelly Greenberg that the Terriers have posted 20 wins or more.
The Terriers had five players score in double-digits for the first time since the 2010-11 season, as junior Whitney Turner led the team with a career-high 14 points. Classmate Rashidat Agboola recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Fellow junior Danielle Callahan and senior Kristen Sims each added 11 points while senior Chantell Alford chipped in 10 points. Classmate Mo Moran added six points and had nearly half (nine) of BU’s 20 assists.
Sherae Swinson lead the Bearcats with nine points and 11 rebounds while Mallory Lawes finished with eight points, as Binghamton drops to 4-20 overall and 3-8 in conference play.
The Terriers shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) for the game while Binghamton ended with a 30.8 field goal percentage (16-of-52). BU held a 39-32 advantage on the glass and finished with six blocked shots.
BU scored the first basket of the game and never looked back, as the Terriers quickly built a 7-0 lead just over a minute into the game. The scoring slowed down from there and BU held a 15-11 lead heading to the under eight minute timeout called with 7:37 left on the clock.
Turner hit a basket with off the in-bound pass out of the break to spark a 15-2 BU run over the next five minutes. Callahan came off the bench to lead BU during the run with eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, while Alford also connected on a shot from beyond the arc to build the Terriers’ lead to 30-13 at the final media timeout of the period called with 2:39 remaining.
Binghamton scored the next four points out of the break and added a 3-pointer from Lawes but Sims hit the final shot of the half to send BU into the locker room with a 36-20 lead.
BU opened the second half with a 6-0 run before Binghamton brought its deficit down to 16, 42-26, following a 3-pointer from Lawes. The Terriers controlled the pace of the game and built their lead to 21 points following a jumper from Turner before the Bearcats used a 9-3 run to come within 13 points, 57-44, with 5:17 to play.
After a pair of free throw shots from Vaneeshia Paulk, Agboola and Turner scored on back-to-back layups to push the Terriers’ lead back to 18 points. From there, Binghamton’s last four points came from the free throw line while a final 3-pointer from freshman Katie Poppe gave BU a 73-51 victory.
The Terriers remain on the road for their next game and head to Burlington, Vt., on Wednesday (Feb. 13) to take on Vermont. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
