LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Sam Talkow was 12-of-12 at the faceoff X but the Boston University men's lacrosse team dropped a 7-3 decision at Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
All but one of the game's 10 goals were scored in the first half as BU (1-7, 1-3 PL) and Bucknell (5-4, 3-2 PL) played a scoreless third quarter and nearly went the entire final 15 minutes without a goal as well. Talkow, freshman Craig Zebrowski and sophomore Sammy Davis each scored for the Terriers. Freshman Christian Carson-Banister stopped nine shots in the loss and allowed just six goals, the fewest he has allowed in his career.
Talkow had his best game of the season as he won all nine draws he took in the first half and three more in the final two quarters. BU had six caused turnovers, led by freshmen Cam Pincus and Greg Wozniak with two each. Fourteen Terriers combined to collect 29 ground balls, including seven by Talkow and six by Wozniak.
The Terriers scored on their first possession and first shot of the game. Davis found Zebrowski on the left side and the freshman fired a quick shot to score his third goal of the year. After Bucknell scored twice to take a 2-1 lead, Talkow leveled the score after a faceoff win. Freshman Ryan Johnston picked up the ball and found Talkow, who made a move to create space and score his second goal of the year.
Davis gave the Terriers a 3-2 lead thanks to a great individual effort. Carson-Banister made a save and his first pass was to Davis. He sprinted up the field and was never contested before firing home his fifth goal of the year.
The Bison answered with two straight goals to make it 4-3 with 5:23 to play in the quarter. Talkow was then ruled to have an illegal stick, giving Bucknell three minutes of man-up time. The Bison capitalized with two quick goals to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.
Both teams played solid defense and the goalies combined for five saves in the third quarter. The story remained the same in the final 15 minutes, with the only goal coming after the Terriers' Tyler Zickel left his cage to force a turnover in the waning moments. A Bucknell shot deflected off a Terrier stick and rolled into the cage to close the scoring. BU outshot the Bison, 14-7, in the final 15 minutes but Sam Grinberg made five of his 13 saves in the quarter to preserve the victory.
BU will return home for two straight tilts, beginning with a March 29 contest against Navy. Game time at Nickerson Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
