EASTON, Pa. - Thanks to the first points of freshman Kali Shumock's collegiate career, the Boston University field hockey team posted a 2-1 victory at Lafayette on Saturday afternoon in the Patriot League opener.

A native of Bethlehem, Shumock couldn't have asked for a better trip home to the Lehigh Valley. The rookie opened the scoring late in the first half before assisting on sophomore Amanda Cassera's game winner to help the Terriers improve to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in League play.

Senior goalkeeper Valentina Cerda Eimbcke (3 saves) and the Terrier defense limited the Leopards (4-3, 0-1 PL) to just four shots on goal and only one shot attempt in the first half.

BU opened the scoring with a goal in transition. Junior Sofi Laurito took a pass at the top of the Terrier zone and dribbled around four defenders before spotting Shumock, who was ahead of the Lafayette defense.

As she approached the circle, Shumock reached past the final Leopard defender to gather Laurito's pass before drilling a reverse-stick shot inside the left post to the netting at 30:23 for her first collegiate goal.

Lafayette used one of its five corners on the day to notch an equalizer in the 47th minute. The play was set up at the top of the circle for senior Jenna Seybert, who found the back of the cage on assists from classmate Kelsey Mead and junior Kirby Szalkowski.

The Terriers, however, wasted little time in regaining the lead, as Cassera registered the winner just over three minutes after the Leopards' tally.

Shumock corralled the ball just outside the Lafayette circle and eluded a defender before pushing the ball up to Cassera. Cassera drew Leopard goalkeeper Jessica Deutsch out of the cage and dribbled around her before slotting a shot inside the right post at the 49:45 mark.

Lafayette's best chance at drawing even again came in the 68th minute, when the Terriers turned over the ball deep in their own end. Cerda Eimbcke came through, stopping a pair of Leopards shots and helping the Terriers secure the road triumph.

Deutsch made four saves in goal for the Lafayette, which pulled her for an extra attacker for the final 1:29.

BU held a 9-7 shot advantage for the contest while the Leopards earned five corners while allowing only one.

The Terriers will return to action on Sunday (Sept. 21) when they host Yale in a 4 p.m. contest at New Balance Field.
