Comeback Falls Short In Overtime At UNH
April 15, 2015 | Women's Lacrosse
DURHAM, N.H. - Despite scoring three goals in under one minute to tie the score late in the game, the Boston University women's lacrosse team was unable to complete the comeback and dropped a 9-8 overtime decision to New Hampshire on Wednesday evening on Bremner Field.
The matchup marked the seventh straight contest played between BU and UNH in Durham that was decided by two goals or less.
The Terriers (6-8, 4-3 PL) were led by sophomore Brynne Yarranton, who scored her first collegiate goals on the Wildcats (6-8) to collect her first two points. Lindsay Weiner contributed three points (1g, 2a) including her 50th career assist.
Caroline Meegan made 11 stops for her fifth 10-save game of the season. Among those were four free-position saves to negate all of the Wildcats' free attempts on net. UNH went 0-5 on free-position shots while the Terriers netted one of the two they were awarded.
Yellow cards became problematic for the Terriers as two BU fouls turned into two man-up goals for New Hampshire, including the game-winning strike in overtime.
The Terriers struggled to maintain possession throughout the game but especially early, as BU lost all eight draw controls of the first half and had just five shots through the first 30 minutes.
New Hampshire won the opening draw and used it to take a 1-0 advantage within the first minute of play. The Wildcats followed it up with another strike to take an early 2-0 lead.
Ally Adams opened scoring for the Terriers to cut the Wildcat lead to one goal and, after UNH netted one more, BU scored the next two off of a Mallory Collins free position strike and a Jill Horka score to tie the game at 3-3.
BU would not find a lead, however, as Kayleigh Hinkle, who led the game with four goals, tossed in her second of the day in the closing minutes of the first period to go into halftime with a 4-3 lead.
UNH continued to build on its lead at the start of the second. The Wildcats netted three unanswered goals within two minutes to take their largest lead of the day, 7-3. BU answered with a pair of their own but the run that mattered most would be late in regulation when the Terriers found the back of the net three times in 55 seconds to tie the game with under three minutes to play and force an overtime period.
New Hampshire managed to net the game-winner with 23 seconds remaining in the first half of overtime and held the ball for all of the second three-minute period to seal its victory.
The Terriers play their final game of the Patriot League regular season on Saturday when they head to Bucknell for a 1 p.m. draw.
