BOSTON -- Senior Lindsay Weiner and junior Remy Nolan each tallied two goals but the Boston University women's lacrosse team suffered an 11-7 setback on a rainy Wednesday night at Nickerson Field.
BU (6-6, 4-2 PL) held a 6-5 advantage over Colgate (7-5, 4-2 PL) early in the second half but the Raiders rattled off four straight goals and five of the game's final six tallies to seal the victory.
The Terriers honored their six-member senior class - Elizabeth Kelley, Austin Noonan, Jenna Boarman, Kelsey Marafioti and co-captains Weiner and Siobhan McCarthy -- prior to Wednesday's game. Marafioti found the back of the net while McCarthy gathered a ground ball and helped set up a transition goal.
Sophomore Caroline Meegan made seven saves, including five in the first half. Junior Jill Horka controlled five draws while Weiner added a pair of draw controls. Horka's five grabs moved her into a tie with Traci Landy ('10) for seventh all-time in career draw controls with 123. Freshman Caroline English notched her first collegiate goal and redshirt junior Mallory Collins also found the back of the net.
Marafioti opened the scoring just 1:59 into the proceedings when she collect an Adams pass and lobbed a shot over Colgate keeper Jennie Berglin's (seven saves) stick. Nolan then made it 2-0 less than two minutes later when she converted on one of the Terriers' two extra-player opportunities of the first half.
Colgate answered just past the halfway point of the first stanza but Weiner responded with 12:27 on the clock with a transition goal. Senior Siobhan McCarthy got the ball to Adams, who quickly dished to Weiner at goal line extended. Weiner stepped to the left post and fired home her eighth goal of the season.
Lauren Gorajek cut the Colgate deficit to 3-2 but Nolan converted a free-position chance with less than 10 minutes remaining in the half to regain a two-goal margin. After two straight markers by the Raiders, English made it 5-4 late in the opening 30 minutes. Hardison found a wide-open English cutting to the cage and the freshman made no mistake for her first collegiate goal. An Emily Peebles goal with 51 seconds left sent the teams to the break in a 5-5 deadlock.
Collins put BU back in front to begin the second half after she scored off a nice dodge at the top of the fan. The Raiders responded with four straight goals, however, to take a 9-6 lead with 15:02 remaining in regulation. Weiner tried to start a comeback with 14 minutes to play, cutting the lead to 9-7, but Colgate collected the final two goals of the game to close the scoring.
BU will return to action on Saturday when the Terriers trek to Loyola Maryland. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
