DURHAM, N.C. – A goal off a corner with 1:24 remaining proved to be the difference as the No. 13 Boston University field hockey team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 contest at No. 3 Duke on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Boston University got on the board first thanks to a goal by senior Hester van der Laan at the 19-minute mark but the Blue Devils got a quick equalizer just 89 seconds later.
The Terriers' corner defense was stellar throughout the day but the final Duke corner resulted in the game winner as a flick by Heather Morris found the netting at the 68:36 mark.
The teams were tied for all but 2:53 of the contest.
Van der Laan's tally was her fifth of the season and came off a corner from the top of the circle on assists from senior Taylor Blood and sophomore Ally Hammel.
Margaux Paolino tied the game for Duke when her shot from the left side off a corner went off a BU stick and in at 20:29.
The Terriers were able to create a few scoring chances with the score knotted in the second half but each of them resulted in shots that went wide of the cage.
Senior Cammy Jensen had a strong performance in goal for the Terriers, making nine saves to match her season high.
Sammi Steele recorded one save in goal for the Blue Devils.

GAME NOTES

Duke held a 27-7 shot advantage and earned 15 corners while allowing three.
Maika Akroyd recorded her first defensive save as a Terrier late in the second half.
This is BU's first four-game losing streak since October 2003.

NEXT UP

BU is back in action on Saturday (Oct. 8) when it returns to Patriot League play with a visit to Bucknell.
The game, which starts at 11 a.m., will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.
