Early Surge Propels Northeastern Past BU in Season Opener, 78-59

BOSTON – Boosted by four early 3-pointers, Northeastern jumped out to a double-digit lead and withstood multiple Terrier runs to defeat the Boston University women's basketball team, 78-59, on Friday afternoon at the Cabot Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Holding an early 6-5 lead, the Huskies scored 16 straight with the help of three 3-pointers and would never let the lead drop to single-digits.
- The Terriers doubled their made field goal shots to eight in the second quarter but still trailed at the half, 43-27, due to 15 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of action.
- The Huskies hit three more treys in the third quarter to halt multiple BU spurts and went a near-perfect 7-of-8 at the line to maintain the lead after three quarters, 65-46.
- In the final quarter, BU could never make a big enough run to cut into the lead and fell, 78-59.
- Senior Courtney Latham was two points shy of tying her career high in points and one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists.
- Junior transfer Sophie Beaudry made her first appearance as a Terrier and had six points, six rebounds and three blocks.
- Junior Kara Sheftic posted a career-high four steals with eight points and three rebounds.
- Senior Sarah Hope started her final year with four 3-pointers and now owns 169 career treys, three shy of BU Hall of Famer Katie Terhune, who owns the No. 4 spot in the BU record book.
- One of three Huskies in double figures, Jess Genco tallied a career-high 27 points to lead the Huskies with the help of seven 3-pointers while adding six rebounds.
- Northeastern shot 42.4 percent from the field while holding BU to 39.7 FG%.
- Besides finishing with a 12-5 advantage in made 3-pointers, the Huskies also had a 16-8 lead in made free throws.
- After committing 15 first-half turnovers, the Terriers limited the miscues to six the rest of the way to trail in points off turnovers only by seven, 26-19.
- Terriers will next continue the season-opening three-game road trip at Boston College on Monday (Nov. 14) with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
- BC won last year's meeting, 58-37, in Case Gym and the previous meeting at Conte Forum in 2014, 73-56.
