Hammel Leads Five All-PL Honorees; Starr Named Coach of the Year
October 31, 2017 | Field Hockey
Sally Starr was selected as the Patriot League Coach of the Year for the third straight year while junior Ally Hammel was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and joined four teammates on the All-Patriot League teams, as announced on Tuesday by the league office.
Hammel, senior co-captain Kali Shumock and junior Allie Doggett were all unanimous selections to the All-Patriot League First Team while sophomore Kiley Gallagher and freshman Ailsa Connolly were second-team honorees. These were the first all-League awards for all five Terriers.
The Terriers were well-represented after completing a perfect 6-0 conference season to win a third consecutive regular-season title, giving them home field for this weekend's Patriot League tournament. This marks the ninth time in Starr's Hall of Fame career that she has earned conference coach of the year honors.

Hammel, who lived up to the Preseason Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year billing she received, has anchored a Terrier defense that allowed just four goals during conference play. She also has contributed on the offensive end with 11 points on five goals and an assist.
Shumock has enjoyed a terrific senior season with 15 points on three goals and a team-high nine assists. She led all Patriot League players in assists during conference play with six and 13 of her points came during the second half of the regular season.
Doggett has teamed up with Shumock and Gallagher to create a formidable midfield for the Terriers this season. Gallagher has tallied nine points (2g, 5a) on the year while Doggett has one assist.
The leading scorer on this year's squad, Connolly has 20 points on 10 goals, which is the most by a BU freshman in eight years. Her 10 tallies have come on just 22 shots.
BU will look to reach the Patriot League title game for the fifth straight season when it takes on fourth-seeded Holy Cross in the first semifinal on Friday (Nov. 3) at noon.
