BOSTON - The No. 20 Boston University field hockey team will play one more game at New Balance Field this season as the Patriot League champion will host MAAC champion Fairfield in the NCAA Opening Round on Wednesday (Nov. 8), the NCAA announced on Sunday evening. Game time on Wednesday is set for 1 p.m.
The winner of the BU-Fairfield contest will visit top-seeded and undefeated UConn in the NCAA First Round on Saturday (Nov. 11) at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday's game will be a rematch of a 2015 NCAA opening-round game in which the Terriers topped the Stags, 6-1.
The Terriers are in the NCAA tournament for the third time in four years after posting a 2-1, come-from-behind victory over Bucknell on Sunday at New Balance Field. Fairfield edged Monmouth, 2-1, in Sunday's MAAC title game.
BU will be making its 13th appearance in the NCAA tournament while the Stags are in the national bracket for the third time in program history. Fairfield made its first NCAA appearance in 2001.
This will be the 10th meeting between the two schools and BU has won all of the previous nine. The teams met every year from 2005-12 before meeting in the NCAAs two seasons ago.
The Terriers have played in 18 NCAA tournament games in their history and have been victorious on five occasions.
