December 5, 2017 | Field Hockey
CHANDLER, Ariz. - For just the second time in Boston University field hockey history, a junior has received All-America First Team honors as Ally Hammel was named to the top squad of this year's Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I All-America honors, which were released on Tuesday.
Hammel joins Vera Schoenfield (1995) as the only Terriers to earn first-team accolades in a junior season. A native of Duxbury, Massachusetts, Hammel is the eighth Terrier to be named to an All-America First Team and is the first BU back to receive the honor.
Last week, Hammel became the first BU player to be named the NFHCA Northeast Region Player of the Year. The 2017 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, Hammel was a unanimous selection to the All-Patriot League First team and was recognized as an NFHCA All-Northeast Region First Team member.
She anchored a Terrier defense that allowed just four goals during conference play and posted a 1.59 goals-against average for the season. The junior added two defensive saves and also contributed on the offensive end with 12 points on five goals and two assists. She was selected to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team and was twice named the league's defensive player of the week.
Hammel, who was a forward during her freshman year at BU, moved to defense prior to her sophomore season and has now played in 63 career games and tallied 39 points on 16 goals and seven assists. She was one of 17 players who earned a spot on the U.S. National Development Squad this past summer following her play the U-21 Junior and Development Squad National Camp and the Young Women's National Championship.
