Connolly's Hat Trick Fuels No. 24 Field Hockey Past Lafayette, 5-1
September 23, 2017 | Field Hockey
BOSTON - Behind freshman Ailsa Connolly's first career hat trick, the No. 24 Boston University field hockey team cruised in its Patriot League opener, topping Lafayette 5-1 Saturday afternoon at New Balance Field.
Petra Hall, Grace Boston and Connolly each found the back of the cage within a seven-minute span to thrust BU to an early three-goal lead. Lafayette would go on to score its lone goal right before the half, but Connolly put the game well out of reach with two more scores in the second half as the Terriers snapped a three-game losing streak.

How it Happened
- Hall started the scoring off for the Terriers in the 20th minute with a diving goal off a feed from Kara Enoch.
- Boston followed five minutes later with a score in transition, stroking a shot right at Lafayette's keeper before sending home the rebound.
- Connolly continued the scoring flurry in the 27th minute as Boston circled through a trio of defenders and slipped a pass to Connolly, who swept the ball into the back of the cage for her first score of the day.
- Lafayette would have its turn at reaching the scoreboard as Ellen Colburne scored in the final minute before the half.
- Enoch sparked the offense once again in the second half, working her way down the left sideline before finding Connolly inside the top of the circle. With a defender closing in, Connolly spun to her right and ripped a shot that slid inside the left post.
- Connolly would notch her final score on a corner, sliding in a one-timer on a dish from Kiley Gallagher to cap the hat trick.
- Five of BU's nine shots on the day found the back of the net, while it held Lafayette to just two shots in each half.
- The Terriers extended their command to 4-1 in the all-time series against the Leopards.
- BU improved to 5-0 in Patriot League openers and won its 12th straight conference opener.
- Kathleen Keegan played the first half in net, while Millie Baker came on for the second half.
- Baker made an impressive point-blank save in the 54th minute on a breakaway shot by Lafayette.
- The Terriers will to New Balance Field tomorrow for a 2 p.m. contest with No. 17 Princeton.
