BOSTON - Sophomore Maggie New broke a 1-1 tie in the 26th minute and the Terrier defense stood tall for the rest of the game as the No. 24 Boston University field hockey team successfully defended its Patriot League title with a 2-1 victory over American on Sunday afternoon at New Balance Field.
BU won the Patriot League championship for the fourth time in five seasons and will make its 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA bracket will be revealed on Sunday night at 10 p.m. on NCAA.com.
Senior Ally Hammel was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by classmate Allie Doggett, junior Kiley Gallagher and sophomore Petra Hall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Maika Akroyd opened the scoring, knocking in a rebound off a corner in the 17th minute.
- The play was set up for sophomore Petra Hall on the right side and her shot was saved by American goalkeeper Maura Jacobs.
- The rebound landed right in front of the goal and Akroyd poked it in for second goal of the season.
- American scored off its first corner of the afternoon as Rafaela Rubas tipped in a shot at the 24:38 mark to make it 1-1.
- Just over a minute later, New raced to keep the ball in the circle on the right side before drilling an incredible shot to the top left corner that regained the lead for the Terriers.BU opened the scoring at 16:45 off its second corner of the game.
- American was able to stay in the game thanks to stops by Jacobs, including an incredible save on a shot by freshman Casey Thompson with just under 10 minutes to play.
- The Eagles put together a pair of scoring chances in the closing minutes, including a late corner, but were unable to muster a shot on goal.
GAME NOTES
- The Terriers outshot the Eagles, 13-7, and held a 4-3 edge in corners.
- Senior goalkeeper Kathleen Keegan made a pair of saves in goal for the Terriers while Jacobs turned aside seven shots for the Eagles.
- BU is now 10-2 all-time in the Patriot League tournament.
- Redshirt senior Jordyn Beesmer will finish her career as a part of four PL championship squads (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018).
- This was the 12th conference tournament title in program history.

- BU will begin its run in the NCAA Tournament in either the Opening Round on Wednesday (Nov. 7) or the First Round on Friday (Nov. 9).
