Women's Lacrosse Falters at Colgate, 12-8

HAMILTON, N.Y. – With the game tied at 6-6 with just over 10 minutes left to play, Colgate pushed a 6- 2 run to close out the game to hand the Boston University women's lacrosse team a 12-8 defeat Wednesday evening at Beyer-Small '76 Field.

- Colgate struck first two minutes in, but the lead was short-lived as Ava Barry delivered the equalizer two minutes later off a find by Tonianne Magnelli.
- Down a man and a goal, BU forced a turnover in its defensive third and Magnelli stormed the length of the field before dishing it off to Ryann Gaffney.
- The freshman took care of the rest, dodging a defender to rope in her first collegiate goal and knot the contest once again with 16:45 remaining in the half.
- Facing a two-goal deficit with 11:25 left in the first, Kailey Conry laced two straight scores, including one in transition off an interception by Maria Guerra, to tie the game up at 4-4 heading into the intermission.
- Barry kept the momentum on the Terriers' side to start the second half, beating a defender one-on-one and finished with an underhand strike to give BU its first lead.
- Colgate reeled off a 2-0 run to reclaim the lead, 6-5, at the 20-minute mark.
- With just over 10 minutes left, Lexi Lewis delivered a quick strike into the back of the net to tie it up, 6-6.
- From there, Colgate took advantage of a non-releasable penalty on the Terriers, scoring four goals in a two-minute span to take a 10-6 lead with 5:45 left.
- The Raiders kept the pressured on in the attacking third, furthering their run to 5-0 until Kaitlin Belval pushed in a free position goal and Conry notched her second hat trick of the season.
- Colgate notched an insurance goal with nine seconds to go to snap a two-game skid to the Terriers.
- Conry notched her 100th career point with her final score of the game.
- Guerra was spectacular on defense, matching a career-high with five ground balls and forced four turnovers.
- Maddie Curley and Barry scooped up four ground balls apiece, while Sarah Andersen and Magnelli collected three each.
- BU won seven of the first nine draw controls before Colgate won eight of the final 10.
- Christine Laible posted her fifth double-digit save effort of the season with 11 stops.
- The Terriers will open up the third annual Lax-A-Palooza on Saturday, March 31 against Loyola Maryland
- Opening draw from Nickerson Field is set for noon.
- The men's team will close out the doubleheader against Lehigh at 3:30 p.m.
