Defense Paces Terriers to 9-6 Senior Day Win Over Bucknell

BOSTON – Led by its six-member senior class, the Boston University women's lacrosse team used a stout defensive effort in shutting down Bucknell, 9-6, on Senior Day Saturday at Nickerson Field.
Maria Guerra caused four of Bucknell's 22 turnovers on the day and also led the Terriers with four ground balls. Additionally, the defense held the Bison to convert on just 24 of their 32 clears, while Christine Laible tabbed her seventh double-digit save effort of the season with 10 stops in net.

How It Happened
- Lexi Lewis weaved her way to the cage from the top of the crease put the Terriers on the board just over a minute into play.
- Following an equalizer by Bucknell, Kailey Conry, Ryann Gaffney and Ava Barry carried BU to a 3-0 run over a five-minute span to push the lead to 4-1 with 20:43 to go in the half.
- BU's defense locked in as it caused four straight turnovers en route to holding the Bison scoreless for 13 minutes.
- Bucknell broke through with back-to-back goals to make it a one-goal game with 9:51 to go before the break.
- Facing a scoring drought of its own, Gaffney and Lewis worked a give-and-to put the Terriers back on the board after a 15-minute gap.
- Makenzie Irvine converted on a free position shot with three seconds left in the half, sending BU into the break with a 6-3 advantage.
- The Bison opened the second half with two straight scores to make it a one-goal again, 6-5, with 20:45 left.
- Conry sparked the attack, finding English and Barry within a 46-second span before finding the back of the net herself, giving BU its largest lead of the game, 9-5, with 14:49 to go.
- Bucknell got one score back with just under two minutes to play, but BU held firm as it claimed its fourth straight win.
- The Terriers improved to 6-0 in Patriot League games against the Bison.
- BU won the draw advantage for the fourth straight game with a 12-5 command.
- Tonianne Magnelli and Kaitlin Belval led the team with five draws each, while Mackenzie Howe won two.
- Gaffney recorded her third straight multi-goal game and has nine goals over the last four.
- Caroline English scored in her third straight game and has seven points during that span.
- BU honored Sarah Andersen, Maddie Curley, Avery Donahoe, Caroline English, Maria Guerra and Christine Laible prior to the start of the contest.
- BU will welcome Holy Cross for its final regular season game at Nickerson Field on Wednesday, April 18 at 7 p.m.
- The game will serve as Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night, where BU faculty, staff and their guests can enjoy a free dinner and tickets, on the house.
