Terriers Double Up Lehigh, 16-8, in Patriot League Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Taking on Lehigh in its Patriot League opener for the second straight season, the Boston University women's lacrosse team scored 12 of the final 14 goals en route to earning a 16-8 victory Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
Following four ties in the first half, Hannah Kenneally connected on a free position chance in the final minute of the frame, sending the Terriers into the break with a 7-6 advantage. BU stayed red-hot as it stormed out of the locker room with five goals over a 12-minute span and never looked back, cruising to its first win against Lehigh since 2015.
Lexi Lewis recorded her second hat trick of the season, while Conry matched her four-point effort with a pair of goals and assists. Emily Vervlied won a team-best five draw controls to go with four ground balls, while Kenneady Smith earned her second straight win in net with a seven-save performance.

How it Happened
- The Mountain Hawks converted on a pair of free position shots to claim an early two-goal lead.
- Makenzie Irvine and Lewis answered right back, scoring within 25 seconds of one another to even the scoreboard.
- Lehigh notched another free position strike to reclaim the upper hand before Christine Carugati picked up a ground ball in the defensive end it took it the distance to make it 3-all at the 10-minute mark.
- The seesaw trend continued as the Mountain Hawks took the lead midway through the first, but BU took advantage of a woman-up opportunity as Kelly Mathews beat the keeper right in front of the crease to make it a 4-4 game.
- Following two straight Lehigh goals, BU responded with three goals in the final two minute of the half, led by two scores from Hannah Kenneally, to pull ahead 7-6.
- The Terriers kept the momentum rolling as Conry scored five minutes into the second half.
- Ava Barry, Kaitlin Belval and Vervlied all scored within a 39-second span before Lewis furthered the run to 8-0, putting the scoreboard at 12-6 with just over 18 minutes to play.
- Mathews and Belval added another two scores in transition, while Conry added the final score of the day for the Terriers as they coasted to post an eight-goal margin of victory.
- The eight-goal margin of victory matched the largest win in the series since 1999, when BU came away with a 17-9 decision in Bethlehem.
- BU won the first six draw controls of the second half and posted an 18-10 advantage for the game.
- The Terriers were perfect in the clearing game for the third time in the last four games, crossing the field successfully in 14-of-14 attempts.
- BU caused 11 of Lehigh's 18 turnovers.
- BU will have the second game of a Nickerson Field doubleheader on Saturday, March 23 against Lafayette at 4 p.m.
- The men's team will open the day against the Leopards with a noon contest.
