Nine Former Terriers Named to NWHL Rosters for 2021 Season
January 21, 2021 | Women's Ice Hockey
Nine former Boston University women's ice hockey standouts will take part in the 2021 National Women's Hockey League season, which will take place Jan. 23 – Feb. 5 at the 1980 Rink-Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, New York.
At least one Terrier will skate for each of the six franchises. The Boston Pride lead the way with four BU alumnae on their roster, including this year's top draft pick, Sammy Davis ('20). Kaleigh Fratkin ('14), Victoria Hanson ('17) and Mary Parker ('17) will join Davis on a roster that general manager Karilyn Pilch ('09) helped put together.
Rebecca Russo ('16) will return to the NWHL this year, rejoining the Metropolitan Riveters after a one-year hiatus. Her classmate at BU, Jordan Juron, is also reuniting with a former club. She will skate for the Buffalo Beauts this year, a team she spent two seasons with from 2017-19.
Shannon Doyle ('15) will serve as captain of the Connecticut Whale for the second straight season. She will be one of three Terriers to wear a letter on the front of their sweater, as Fratkin and Juron were named assistant captains of their respective squads. This will also be Fratkin's second straight year in a leadership role.
Nina Rodgers ('18) re-signed with the Minnesota Whitecaps for the 2021 campaign after finishing last season with them. Rodgers began her professional career with the Whale in 2018-19. In addition to Davis, Sarah Steele ('17) will make her NWHL debut in Lake Placid. Steele signed with the Toronto Six, the league's newest franchise that will open the bubble on Jan. 23 with its first-ever game.
Fans will be able to watch every game of the regular season on Twitch, while the Isobel Cup Semifinals and Final will air live exclusively on NBCSN on February 4-5.
