HOW IT HAPPENED
Freshman Payton Anderson scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 37th minute to cut American's lead to 2-1. The Terriers generated chances for an equalizer but American held on to the lead and added a late goal for the 3-1 final.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The visitors took a 2-0 lead into the half and both goals came in the first quarter.
- American earned a penalty stroke in the fifth minute of play when a rebound attempt went off the body of a BU defender in front of the goal line.
- Maura Phelan sent the try into the top left corner of the cage for a 1-0 American lead at 4:29.
- The Eagles had some good fortune nine minutes later when a mishit on a reverse-stick attempt by Aidan Rossman turned into an elevated chip shot that went over BU goalkeeper Caroline Kelly and into the far corner to make it a 2-0 contest.
- After a tough opening 15 minutes, BU turned in a strong second quarter, earning two corners and a 6-1 shot advantage with four on goal, but unfortunately had nothing to show for it and stayed down a pair entering the break.
- The Terriers got on the board just 6:30 into the second half when a long ball from freshman Katie Devine made its way to Thalia Steenssens, who penetrated the circle and dribbled up the left end line before finding Anderson in front of the cage, where the freshman took an attempt that went off AU goalkeeper Bryn Underwood and in.
- BU kept the pressure on in search of an equalizer, including three shots on goal in a span of two minutes early in the fourth, but Underwood and the American defense kept their lead intact.
- The Eagles added an insurance goal off a corner with 1:09 to play to cap the scoring.
- Kelly and Underwood each recorded seven saves in the contest.
- Phelan added a key defensive save for the Eagles in the second quarter.
- American held a 16-11 shot advantage and earned six corners to BU's four.
- Anderson's eight goals are the most by a BU rookie since Ailsa Connolly reocorded 11 in 2017.
- The Terriers will close out their three-game homestand on Sunday (Oct. 24) when No. 24 Duke visits New Balance Field.
- Game time is set for noon.
- BU will hold its annual Senior Day ceremony prior to the contest.
