BOSTON –
Sally Starr, who has guided the Boston University field hockey program to a combined 29 conference tournament and regular-season titles during her Hall of Fame coaching career, has agreed to a multi-year contract extension, director of athletics
Drew Marrochello announced today.
Starr recently completed her 41st season at the helm of the BU program, becoming the longest-tenured head coach in department history by surpassing the 40-year career of legendary men's ice hockey coach
Jack Parker.
A 2015 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Hall of Fame honoree, Starr has guided the Terriers to 14 appearances in the NCAA Tournament and the program has captured four of the past eight Patriot League tournament titles.
A hallmark of Starr's incredible tenure has been her ability to keep BU competitive nationally year after year. BU has been ranked in the final NFHCA Coaches' Poll 25 times since 1985.
"For four decades,
Sally Starr has built a source of pride for not just our department but the entire University," said Marrochello. "Her impact on the many accomplished alumnae who have played for her is truly incredible and we look forward to continue watching her build her legacy."
A three-time Dita/NFHCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year (2005, 2007, 2017), Starr ranks sixth all-time in Division I coaching wins with 496. Her teams at BU have posted winning records in 31 of the past 38 seasons and Starr has earned conference coach of the year honors 10 times in her distinguished career, including five times since 2015.
"I am grateful to have the opportunity to continue to work at this world-class University, surrounded by an outstanding staff and talented student-athletes," said Starr. "My goal is always to provide an enriching experience for our young women as we strive for championships and the opportunity to compete in the NCAA tournament. Thank you to
Drew Marrochello and President Brown for the trust you have bestowed on me to continue to lead this special program."
Starr has posted an impressive 477-317-19 record in her tenure at BU while appearing in 21 conference title games. During her 39 years at the Division I level (BU gained Division I status in 1983), Starr has coached 43 NFHCA All-Americans, including nine first-team selections, and 88 of her players have earned a combined 141 All-Region selections.
