KINGSTON, R.I. – Sophomore
Kelsi Mingo set career-highs with 12 points on four three-pointers, and senior
Riley Childs notched an 11-point, 10-rebounds double-double, but the Boston University women's basketball team's fourth-quarter rally against Rhode Island fell short in a 54-44 setback on Sunday afternoon at the Thomas M. Ryan Center.
The Terriers (4-6) trailed by as much as 20 points in the second half and 14 after three quarters, but closed the gap to 43-41 with 3:56 remaining in the fourth. However, the Rams (10-3) got consecutive baskets from Emmanuelle Tahane and Dez Elmore for breathing room. Mingo's triple at the 1:43 mark got BU within 47-44 before URI iced the game on free throws.
Mingo's 12 points and Childs' 10 rebounds paced the Terriers. Junior
Maren Durant also reached double figures with 11 points and eight boards.
Tahane totaled a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds. Marta Vargas was the only other Ram in double digits with 10 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU trailed 8-3 early, but Childs entered the game and contributed with an offensive board that led to junior Maggie Pina's baseline jumper. Childs then nailed a turnaround fadeaway near the right block to cut the gap to one past the midpoint of the first.
- With less than two minutes left in the opening quarter, Childs snagged another offensive rebound and put it back up to knot the score at 10. Her left-corner three with 59 seconds left put the Terriers on top 13-12 at the end of the quarter.
- Each team traded buckets to open the second. The Terriers took a brief 17-16 lead on Durant's baseline jumper, only for Marie-Paule Foppossi to counter with a jumper on URI's ensuing possession.
- Rhode Island used that basket to start a 10-0 run over 2:19, as Marta Vargas knocked down a pair of threes that increased the Rams' edge to 26-17.
- Durant and freshman Alex Giannaros converted layups to cut the BU deficit to five, but URI scored the final five points of the frame to go to halftime on top 31-21.
- After Pina buried a left-elbow jumper just inside the arc and two Ram baskets from Vargas, both teams went on a 2:28 scoring drought before Tahane's and Foppossi's layups increased URI's lead to 39-23 halfway through the third.
- Those baskets ignited a 12-0 Rhode Island run over 4:36 of action, giving URI its largest lead of the day at 43-23 with less than four minutes left in the period.
- Mingo drilled a second-chance, straightaway three-pointer to jumpstart a 6-0 Terrier run, while BU's defense kept the Rams scoreless for the final 3:58 to pull with 43-29 heading to the fourth.
- BU extended the burst to a 18-0 mark, highlighted with two Mingo triples that closed the gap to 43-41 Rams with 3:56 to play.
- After redshirt senior Emily Esposito found Mingo for the three that made it 47-44, Tahane attacked the rim for a layup at the 1:19 mark, pushing the URI lead to five.
- Mingo was unable to sink a contested layup from the right side the other way, and junior Annabelle Larnard's second-chance putback swirled out on the rim.
GAME NOTES
- BU was limited to 24.2 percent shooting from the field, including .222 from distance. Rhode Island shot .367, but was just 2-of-15 from deep.
- The Terriers outrebounded the Rams with a season-best 48 rebounds, including 23 on the offensive glass.
- Esposito led the team with a career-high seven assists, as BU assisted on 81 percent of their field goals. In her last five games, she is averaging 4.2 assists per contest.

- BU's bench outscored Rhode Island's 23-6. The Terriers have gotten 20-plus points from reserves in five contests this year.
