ATLANTA, Ga. – Quickly shifting the focus following its last game on Sunday, the Boston University women's basketball team is in the Peach State for its 2021-22 non-conference finale, taking on No. 17/21 Georgia Tech on Tuesday, Dec. 21. Opening tip is scheduled for 1 p.m.
BU squares off against its second opponent from the ACC this season after defeating Boston College 69-65 back on Nov. 17. Tuesday marks the Terriers' first matchup against a ranked opponent since Dec. 3, 2015, when BU visited No. 24 Arizona State. The Terriers aim for their first victory over a Top 25 foe since defeating No. 17/15 St. John's 66-49 on Dec. 1, 2012, and their third overall.
Georgia Tech vaulted into 17th in the Associated Press women's basketball poll on Monday, and sits 21st in the USA Today Coaches poll. Tuesday marks the Yellow Jackets' fourth consecutive home game, and the last on their homestand. TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU's two-game winning streak was halted at the hands of Rhode Island in Sunday's 54-44 defeat in Kingston.
- Down 43-23 in the third quarter, the Terriers mounted an 18-0 extended rally to pull within two late in the fourth quarter, but the Rams held on for the win.
- Sophomore Kelsi Mingo buried a career-high four three-pointers, three of which came in the second half, for a team- and personal-best 12 points.
- Senior Riley Childs registered her second-straight double-double, dropping 11 points and 10 rebounds while making her first appearance since Dec. 1. Sunday was her 30th career game leading the Terriers in caroms.
- Junior Maren Durant recorded 11 points and eight boards, her second double-digit scoring effort on the campaign.
- With a win, BU will record five wins in non-conference play for the second season in a row the Terriers played an out-of-conference slate, as BU won five such contests in 2019-20 and did not play out-of-conference opponents in 2020-21. Such a scenario would be the first time since the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.
- Mingo's output was the sixth instance a Terrier reserve scored 10-plus points in a game this year. Junior Liz Shean has four such efforts.
- In all 10 games this season, BU's bench has reached double figures. The 23 points on Sunday was the fifth time eclipsing 20 or more points.
- Durant and sophomore Caitlin Weimar have formed the Patriot League's best blocking duo to this point, as the forwards have 14 and 10 blocks to rank fourth and fifth, respectively, in the conference. BU is the only team to have two student-athletes in the top-five.
- With Childs' 7.9 rebounds per game, Durant's 7.7, and Weimar's 6.7, the Terriers are the only Patriot League school to have three student-athletes in the top 11 conference leaders in rebounds per game. Childs, Durant, and Weimar are fifth, seventh, and 11th, respectively.
- BU ranks second in the Patriot League with its .370 three-point percentage. Their 6.4 triples per contest is good for third in the league.
SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS
- Georgia Tech is 9-2 on the season, and has two wins against Top 25 teams in No. 20/19 Georgia (55-54) and No. 3/2 UConn (57-44).
- Entering Monday, the Yellow Jackets lead the nation in scoring defense (45 points allowed per game) and field goal percentage defense (.311).
- The Yellow Jackets have held seven of their 11 adversaries under 50 points. They are 2-2 when allowing 50-plus points.
- Most recently, Georgia Tech earned its first ACC win of the year, 62-45, over Wake Forest, where Head Coach Melissa Graves was an assistant for the previous three seasons.
- Nerea Hermosa leads the team with 11.2 points per game. Eylia Love also averages double figures with 10.5 points per contest. Lorela Cubaj snags 12.5 rebounds per game, good for fourth in the nation.
- Last season, the Yellow Jackets went 17-9, including a 12-6 mark that guided them to the ACC Semifinals and an NCAA Tournament at-large bid. Georgia Tech advanced to the Sweet 16 with wins over Stephen F. Austin and West Virginia.
SERIES HISTORY
- Tuesday marks the first all-time meeting between BU and Georgia Tech.
- The Terriers are 0-4 against ACC foes outside of Boston College, and 4-14 including the Eagles.
- This includes two games against Duke, one against Clemson, and one when Maryland was a member of the conference.
