Women's Lacrosse Drops PL Opener at Colgate, 14-9

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Taking the road for its Patriot League opener, the Boston University women's lacrosse team kept it close but ultimate fell at Colgate, 14-9, Sunday afternoon at Crown Field.
Colgate (3-1, 2-0 PL) took the lead just over a minute into play and never trailed. BU (1-4, 0-1 PL) worked its way back from two four-goal deficits, facing one in the first half and one in the second, but couldn't deliver an equalizer.
Emily Vervlied had an all-around day for the Terriers, leading the team in goals (3), points (4), ground balls (4) and caused turnovers (3). Tobey Tick posed her second multi-goal effort of the season, while Kennady Smith made a season-high 12 saves.
Colgate, the Patriot League-leading team in draw controls, held 19-6 advantage on the draw which limited BU's offensive opportunities.

How It Happened
- Colgate roped two early strikes before Vervlied dodged her way to the cage from 25 yards out to get BU on board.
- Tick followed with her own solo effort, working from behind the net and ripped a shot inside the far post, making it a 4-2 game with 14:48 left in the half.
- Kendall Sims lined a strike into the upper-90 to keep it a one-goal game, 5-3, though the Raiders responded with two straight to take a four-goal grip with 8:46 on the clock.
- BU answered with its own 2-0 streak, as Tick slipped in another dart between a trio of defenders, and Vervlied cut the gap to 7-5 at the break.
- Vervlied maintained the hot stick, netting her third unassisted strike to get BU within one, 7-6, with 20:25 to play.
- The Raiders netted three straight goals within a two-minute span to regain a four-goal edge, but Nicole Foringer rolled her way in front of the crease to get the Terriers back on track with 13:43 remaining.
- BU kept the momentum on its side as Makenzie Irvine found Ava Barry before going solo to the net, getting BU within two, 11-9, with 8:10 to play.
- However, the comeback attempt would end there as the Raiders closed out the game with three straight goals to hold off the Terriers.
- Vervlied's hat trick was her second of the season.
- Colgate held a 26-13 advantage in shots and caused 18 turnovers.
- Six of BU's goals were unassisted.
- BU will return home as it hosts Holy Cross on Saturday, March 27 at noon.
