Women's Lacrosse Stays Dedicated to Community Service
June 1, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
BOSTON – Continuing its drive to help others, the Boston University women's lacrosse team participated in several community service initiatives during the spring semester.
First, members of the team supported Game Hair Havoc as part of the HEADstrong Foundation. The HEADstrong Foundation offers financial, residential, and emotional support to families within the lacrosse community affected by cancer. The Game Hair Havoc fundraising campaign empowers athletes to use their creative hair styles and braids to show solidarity and support for patients who have lost their hair due to the side effects of cancer treatment. The team raised $5,885, well over its original goal of $3,000.
Additional members of the team signed up for the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Registry, an organization that primarily combats blood cancer. Due to the nature of blood cancer, the most effective treatments are either stem cell or bone marrow transplants, and potential matches are determined through genetic testing. Team members did a cheek swab kit by mail and sent the swab back to be registered into the organization's database, and will now be potential donors for the rest of their lives.
