Latest Women's Tennis Recruiting Class Earns National Recognition
August 3, 2021 | Women's Tennis
BOSTON – The reigning Patriot League champion Boston University women's tennis team will enter its title defense campaign with a heralded recruiting class, as TennisRecruiting.net placed the Terriers 13th among all mid-majors.
Authored each of the last 15 years, the TRN mid-major rankings include all colleges outside of the Power 5 (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC) and the Ivy League. Overall, head coach Lesley Sheehan's recruiting efforts have been recognized in the poll 12 times, two more than the next closest team. This year's ranking marks the ninth time the Terriers have placed in the top 15. All three incoming freshmen ranked in the top 75 individually by TRN at one point over the last four years.
A five-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net who ranked as high as No. 40 nationally, Michelle Kleynerman most recently won the Girls U18 Level 3 Closed Championship at New York Tennis Club. The Pleasantville, New York, native also reached the quarterfinals at the USTA National Indoor Championships as a junior while also winning the Eastern Sweet 16 title at Glen Head Racket Club.
Nina Gulbransen is a four-star recruit who ranked as high as No. 45 nationally and was a four-year member of the USTA National Junior Development Team. The Boca Raton, Florida, native was a 2019 finalist at the USTA Florida Daytona Beach Level 4 tournament and previously won the 2014 USTA Clay Court Nationals along with the 2015 USTA Easter Bowl Nationals.
Sydney Sharma is the second four-star recruit in this year's class who ranked as high as No. 68 nationally. The Warren, New Jersey, native started off her freshman year winning the Somerset County Tournament title. This past year, she won in straight sets the Boca Delray Winter Level 6 Singles Championship and reached the semifinals at a 2020 ITA Fall Circuit event in South Carolina.
Besides welcoming the three newcomers, the Terriers return a pair of Patriot League Rookies of the Year in former five-star recruits Kaitlin Tan (2021) and Shelly Yaloz (2019). They also return 2021 All-Patriot League honorees Victoria Carlsten and Erica Di Battista.
