Shanahan Named Hockey East Rookie of the Week
February 21, 2022 | Women's Ice Hockey
AMESBURY, Mass. - Freshman goaltender Callie Shanahan of the Boston University women's ice hockey team has been named Hockey East Rookie of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Shanahan was terrific for the Terriers in a 1-1 tie at Providence on Friday night. She made 42 saves against the Friars, though the best one came with just 1:34 to play in overtime. Lindsay Bochna collected a pass all alone in front of the net, but Shanahan reacted in time to make the save and send the teams to the shootout. Shanahan also made three saves during Friar power play late in the third period to help force overtime.
A native of Commerce, Michigan, Shanahan has enjoyed a strong rookie season between the BU pipes. She has posted a .926 save percentage and a 2.36 goals-against average in 13 starts for the Terriers. Shanahan set a career high with 53 saves at Northeastern on Jan. 21, one of five performances where she made at least 30 stops.
Monday marks the second time Shanahan has been selected as the league's Rookie of the Week. She also received that honor on Oct. 4 after she opened the season with two wins, including a shutout against New Hampshire.
BU will begin the 2022 Hockey East Tournament on Saturday when the Terriers travel to UConn for a quarterfinal matchup. Puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m.
