WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior
Jennifer Barry set the Boston University women's lacrosse single-season program record in draw controls, but the Terriers were unable to defeat Holy Cross in a 19-12 setback on Wednesday evening at Kuzniewski Field.
Barry became the first Terrier in program history to control over 100 draws in a single season, racking up 10 on the night to surpass Jill Horka's record of 91 in 2016. The Long Islander also moved into third place all-time in career draw controls with the effort.
Senior
Kennady Smith started in goal and made a career-high 18 saves, two shy of the single-game program record. Sophomore
Kendall Sims paced the BU offense with three goals.
Isabela Miller recorded five goals and an assist for a game-high six points, while the Patriot League's leading scorer, Jolie Creo, added three goals. Grace Flink totaled 10 saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Holy Cross scored the game's first goal, BU equalized when sophomore Kaelin Isaacson found junior Lauren Kaye from just under 10 meters out. The junior burst down the middle and beat Flink down low.
- The Crusaders scored the next three goals, however, ending the first quarter ahead 4-1.
- BU's next goal came with 9:32 on the clock in the second. The Terriers didn't opt for the free position attempt, but Kaye found Sims open on a cut in front to cut the deficit to 7-2.
- Holy Cross answered moments later, but senior Caroline Pinho's individual effort from 12 meters out on the right side resulted in a Terrier tally, making it 8-3.
- Pinho later found Tick on the doorstep for a one-timer with 4.2 seconds left in the quarter, settling the halftime score at 11-4 in favor of Holy Cross.
- The Terriers opened the third with two goals in the first 1:40. Spaeth picked up a ground ball off a Crusader turnover and buried it, then Sims lit the lamp for the second time to close the gap to 11-6.
- Holy Cross quickly countered with a goal, but Kaye connected with freshman Abby Cotraro in front of the right post, and the rookie potted it to make it 12-7 with 11:28 remaining in the stanza.
- The Crusaders would record back-to-back free position scores before Isaacson spun away from a defender and beat Flink. Sophomore Cassie Reinertson then tracked down a loose ball in Holy Cross' end and score on BU's second opportunity.
- From 1:05 left in the third to the 11:13 mark in the fourth, Holy Cross rattled off three straight goals to go ahead 17-9.
- Sims completed the hat trick and Reinertson tallied a free position goal that brought the Terriers within 17-11, but Lauren Drillock responded less than a minute after Reinertson's goal with her own.
- Barry also capitalized on the free position with 3:45 to play to cap BU's scoring.
