BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the second consecutive, the Boston University women's tennis team has earned a pair of major Patriot League awards along with three All-Conference honors, the conference office announced Monday morning.
Posting a perfect 6-0 record at No. 1 singles against league competition, sophomore Victoria Carlsten was tabbed BU's first PL Player of the Year since 2017, while graduate student Emily Kim received her second Doubles Team of the Year award alongside junior Erica Di Battista. Carlsten was also joined on the first team by fellow sophomore Kaitlin Tan, while Di Battista claimed second team accolades.
A native of Malmo, Sweden, Carlsten tallied 14 wins in singles action, including nine in the top slot, to become a two-time All-PL First Team honoree and the third Terrier to earn the PL's top award since 2014 alongside three-time winner Johanna Hyoty (2014-16) and 2017 recipient Remi Ramos. Carlsten earned all six victories over PL opponents in straight sets and was one game away from adding a seventh win in the conference tournament final when her match was halted. Besides posting a pair of wins against Brown, she won a set against both No. 30 Florida International and No. 70 Florida Atlantic. In doubles action, she added 11 victories with a perfect 5-0 mark at line 2.
Kim (Plano, Texas) and Di Battista (Montreal, Quebec) led BU with eight wins in the top doubles slot with two victories against Army's 2021 PL Doubles Team of the Year in Stephanie Dolehide and Caroline Vincent. They posted notable non-conference victories over Brown, UConn, Rhode Island and Duquesne at line 1 and also added No. 2 wins against Boston College and Bryant for the Terriers' fourth overall Doubles Team of the Year award, which was originated prior to the start of the 2014-15 season. Kim received BU's last honor in 2019 with senior Shelly Yaloz after Hyoty was recognized in both 2015 (with Barbara Rodriguez) and 2016 (with Sabrina Faybyshev).
Named the 2021 PL Rookie of the Year, Tan claimed her second All-PL First Team award by posting eight singles wins with a No. 1 victory over Bryant. The Tacoma, Washington, native recorded No. 2 wins over Brown and Harvard while adding a No. 3 victory against UConn. She also earned a 16-3 record in doubles action, teaming primarily with Yaloz for notable wins in the top slot against Harvard and Bryant alongside line 2 victories over No. 30 FIU, No. 70 FAU and Yale.
Besides claiming her first major year-end award, Di Battista added her second All-PL honor by collecting 17 singles victories. After winning all three matches at the Brown Fall Classic, she posted a No. 1 win during the spring against Binghamton and tallied No. 2 wins against UConn, Rhode Island, Bryant and Loyola Maryland. She also collected No. 3 victories over Navy and Duquesne.
