Women’s Tennis Opens Fall Slate at Harvard Fall Classic

ALLSTON, Mass. – The Boston University women's tennis team competed in its first fall tournament of the season at the Harvard Fall Classic. In addition to hosts Harvard, the Terriers faced opponents from Boston College, Rhode Island, Providence and North Texas.

BU notched a combined 24 wins on the weekend in singles and doubles play. Singles accounted for 15 wins, while the remaining nine came from doubles.

Both freshman Navya Vadlamudi and sophomore Nina Gulbransen advanced to the finals in their respective singles flights. Vadlamudi topped an opponent from BC 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 and Harvard 6-1, 6-4 to reach the final in her flight. Gilbransen took down her Providence opponent in straight sets and her Rhode Island foe in a closely contested match that ended with a 7-6 (5), 6-7 (2), 1-0 (4) decision. Both Terriers finished the weekend 2-1 in singles.

Sophomore Michelle Kleynerman recorded the best record of the weekend with a 3-0 performance with wins against players from Harvard, North Texas and BC. Senior Erica Di Battista and graduate student Shelly Yaloz put themselves in the winning column with two wins each in the tournament, while junior Victoria Carlsten, freshman Rhea Rai, junior Kaitlin Tan and freshman Emily Zhao all notched one win each.

In doubles, Vadlamudi and Gulbransen continued to dominate. The pair advanced to their flight's final with wins over their Providence and BC opponents. Three additional pairs earned two wins each on the weekend in Tan/Steph Nguyen, Carlsten/Di Battista and Kleynerman/Yaloz.

The Terriers will be back in action later this month at the Yale Invitational and the Hall of Fame Doubles Tournament. Both contests will take place Sept. 23-25.
