BOSTON – Sophomore
Natalie Godoy collected two goals, two other Terriers found the back of the net, and the Boston University women's soccer program earned a 4-0 Senior Day victory over American on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
The Terriers (7-5-5, 4-2-2 PL) scored twice in the first 18 minutes and never looked back, posting their sixth home victory in 2023 along with their fourth shutout. Before the game, BU honored the senior class of
Abigail McNulty,
Lily Matthews,
Michelle Williams, and
Grace Ferrara.
Godoy finished with five points, while McNulty had three on a goal and assist. Matthews notched a career-high three assists. Sophomore
Giulianna Gianino added her sixth goal of the season. Junior goalkeeper
Celia Braun recorded four saves.
Izzy Kadzban led American (3-8-4, 3-4-1 PL) with two shots. Julia Kato made eight stops between the posts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gianino nearly put BU ahead in the eighth minute when Kato sent her chance inside the box over the crossbar. After two Terrier corners, American earned a team save on junior Morgan Fagan.
- The Terriers broke the ice in the 10th minute. Matthews poked a pass to senior Kayla Ross, whose lead pass found Godoy bursting on goal. The sophomore got past Kato to tuck the ball into the net.
- On a throw-in in the 18th minute, Godoy sent the ball to Matthews, and the senior led Gianino down the middle, allowing the sophomore to get by Kato for a 2-0 Terrier lead.
- Freshman Kaiya Stewart almost made it a three-goal advantage in the 35th minute after catching up to Matthews' lead pass, but her shot trailed just wide left.
- In the 69th minute, after Kato punched away a BU free kick, freshman Ava Maguire placed a shot towards the lower-right corner. An Eagle defender turned it aside, then Kato snared sophomore Mackenzie Stickelman's header on the ensuing corner kick.
- American countered the other way, requiring Braun to make a save near the left post in the 71st minute.
- On a free kick in the 78th minute, Matthews zipped a 20-yard direct kick towards Kato, who crouched to her left to make the save.
- The Terriers went ahead 3-0 in the 83rd minute. Junior Hugrún Helgadóttir connected with McNulty down the left sideline, and the latter centered it for Godoy for one final touch before a finish into the lower-left corner.
- With just 1:29 remaining in the second half, Stewart passed off to Matthews, who raced down the middle of the field towards the goal. McNulty caught up to the ball inside the box to send it home.
STATS
- BU sported a 24-6 advantage in shots, including a 14-4 advantage in shots on target. Both represent season-highs.
- In total, American made 10 saves.
- The Terriers generated five corner kicks to the Eagles' three.
- Each team sustained two yellow cards.
- Braun, Matthews, Stickelman, and senior Grace Ferrara played the full 90 minutes.
NOTES

- Godoy becomes the third Terrier to register a brace this season, joining McNulty and Fagan. She now shares the team lead with Gianino with six goals.
- Gianino now sports a team-high 15 points.
- McNulty has collected points in four of her six Patriot League matches, and 10 total.
- Matthews becomes the fourth Terrier in program history to accrue three assists in a game. The last Terrier to achieve the feat was Kylie Strom on Oct. 10, 2010.

- BU now leads the rivalry with American 9-0-2, having won four-straight matches.
