Terriers Upset No. 20 Navy, 12-11

BOSTON – After building an early lead in the first quarter that it never relinquished, BU women's lacrosse (7-6, 2-4 PL) upset No. 20 Navy (10-3, 4-1 PL) in a 12-11 result on Saturday afternoon. Seven Terriers scored to propel BU to its first ranked victory since 2014.

The last time BU defeated a ranked opponent was in the 2014 season when it defeated No. 14/19 Navy on the road, 9-8.

Sophomore Matty Spaeth led the Terriers in goals with four on the day for her eighth multi-goal game this season. Also picking up multiple goals were sophomores Abby Cotraro and Hannah Tillier who each found the back of the net twice. Grad student Maddie MacMaster, seniors Claire Gola and Jennifer Barry, and junior Kendall Sims each added one for BU.

Cotraro and Tillier also picked up two assists while MacMaster picked up one. Spaeth, Cotraro and Tiller all had a four-point day in the win.

Junior netminder Reilly Agres made 10 saves to keep the Terriers in the lead for most of the game. This marks the fourth game this season in which she has at least 10 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Navy struck first with a goal just 46 seconds into the game.
  • The Terriers were unfazed by Navy's early advances as they went on to score four unanswered goals.
  • Tillier lit the lamp for the Terriers at the 12:40 mark after she successfully dodged Navy's defenses.
  • A shooting space foul on the Mids allowed Spaeth a chance to score on the free position as she put BU up 2-1 with the game-winner.
  • Goals by Sims and Spaeth closed out BU's four-goal streak with 7:48 to go in the first.
  • Navy responded 59 seconds later with its second goal of the day.
  • Goals were traded back and forth for the remainder of the opening frame. Cotaro found Tillier who extended BU's lead to 5-2 and Navy responded with another goal minutes later.
  • Cotraro closed out the scoring in the first quarter with her first goal of the day.
  • The second frame featured the fewest goals with BU and Navy each scoring twice.
  • The Mids' Ava Yovino struck first but it was not long until Cotraro found Barry to score BU's seventh goal.
  • Yovino scored again for Navy at the 7:39 mark.
  • After Navy was given a yellow card, Tiller found Gola who scored on the woman-up advantage at 4:37 to close out scoring in the first half and give BU the 8-5 lead.
  • The third quarter was the only time that the Mids outscored the Terriers.
  • Navy got the first goal of the quarter but was quickly met by a response from BU as Spaeth scored her third of the day with help from Tillier.
  • The Mids scored twice before entering the final frame with BU leading a narrow 9-8.
  • After a slower start to the final quarter, Spaeth scored, unassisted, with 7:15 to go in the game.
  • Navy once again cut BU's lead to one goal at the 6:16 mark.
  • MacMaster gave BU some cushion with a goal of her own to help the Terriers up 11-9 with 5:37 left.
  • The Mids answered once again and BU found itself with a one-goal lead.
  • Navy was given its fourth yellow card of the day which opened a woman-up opportunity for the Terriers. MacMaster found Cotraro with seconds left on the shot clock as the sophomore netted BU's final goal of the game.
  • A late goal by Navy with five seconds remaining cut BU's lead to one goal, but the Terriers would still emerge with the 12-11 win.
