July 25, 2023 | General, Women's Basketball
Returning for a 15th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday this summer as we count down this year's Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com.
Coming in at number four in this year's Terrier 12 is the women's basketball team, which claimed the program's first-ever Patriot League regular season championship in 10 seasons as a conference member.
As a whole, BU went 24-9 to record the second-highest single-season win total in program history. The Terriers won 20-plus games for the sixth time ever, and the first since the 2012-13 campaign.
In Patriot League action, BU won 17 games in a row, the fifth-longest active streak in the nation at its peak, to become the third PL program ever to notch 17 league victories.
Entering the Patriot League Tournament as the No. 1 seed for the first time ever, BU dispatched No. 9 Loyola Maryland in the quarterfinal round, and defeated No. 5 Army West Point in the semifinals. Hosting the Patriot League Championship at Case Gym for the second time in three seasons, the Terriers welcomed 1,305 spectators to The Roof, believed to be the program's largest single-game attendance in the team's Patriot League era.
BU went on to receive a bid to the WNIT, its fifth appearance in the postseason tournament and first in 10 years.
Head Coach Melissa Graves was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year, becoming the second Terrier to receive the honor. In her second season at the helm, Graves helped guide BU to a program-record .381 three-point percentage, good for fifth in the nation. The Terriers also paced the Patriot League in areas such as scoring margin, rebounds per game, blocks per game, and field goal percentage.
Junior forward Caitlin Weimar became the program's first Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year. An All-ECAC First Team and First Team All-Patriot League selection, Weimar finished the season averaging 15.5 points and 10 rebounds per contest, joining Debbie Miller-Palmore as the only Terriers to average a double-double in a season. Weimar also led the Patriot League with 1.8 blocks per game.
In addition to Weimar, three other Terriers picked up All-Patriot League honors. Senior guard Sydney Johnson became the first Terrier in the Patriot League era to be named First Team in multiple seasons after she registered 12.8 points per game on over 40 percent shooting from downtown. Johnson finished her BU tenure 11th in program history with 1,255 career points.
Senior Maren Durant garnered Third Team and All-Defensive Team accolades after recording eight rebounds per game and 47 blocks. The Winchester, Mass. native departed BU as the program's second-best shot blocker with 172 career rejections.
Sophomore Alex Giannaros also received a Third Team selection. The Brockton, Mass. product finished as the Division I statistical champion with a .515 three-point percentage on the year, while scoring 10.4 points per game.
