July 28, 2023 | General, Women's Tennis
Returning for a 15th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday this summer as we count down this year's Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com.
Coming in at number three in this year's Terrier 12 is the women's tennis team, which hoisted its sixth Patriot League trophy in 10 years and also set a program record with 19 victories.
In non-conference play, BU went a combined 4-0 against the Ivy League with a 4-3 upset triumph over No. 49 Brown for the program's highest-ranked victory since 2007 alongside wins over Cornell (5-2) and Dartmouth (6-1). The Terriers also dispatched Yale, 5-2, for their first victory over the Bulldogs since 2008 and would go on to earn their first top-75 national ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in 12 years.
After posting a 5-0 record against Patriot League competition, BU cruised in the PL tournament as the top seed with three shutouts en route to the program's 28th overall conference title and 19th NCAA berth. For her efforts at the helm, Lesley Sheehan was named both Patriot League Coach of the Year and ITA Northeast Region Coach of the Year.
With a 23-7 singles record, Shelly Yaloz earned three major honors as PL Scholar-Athlete of the Year, PL Tournament MVP and ITA Northeast Region's Most Improved Senior. Yaloz was joined by sophomore Michelle Kleynerman, junior Victoria Carlsten and junior Kaitlin Tan in earning All-Conference recognition, while freshman Emily Zhao was tabbed PL Rookie of the Year.
After coming up short at No. 14 Miami in the NCAA opener, the Terriers finished the season at 19-5, topping the previous program record for wins at 17, set previously during the 1987-88 campaign.
