Amalia Preece scored off a breakaway in overtime to lead the Boston University field hockey team to thrilling 3-2 victory over Maine on Friday afternoon at the Maine Field Hockey Complex.

Alex Purcell's first collegiate goal late in the third quarter ended up sending the game to overtime. Senior

Kate Thomason made six saves with five coming after halftime to help the Terriers earn their first win of the season and improve to 1-1.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers earned the first two corners of the game and scored on the latter to open the scoring.
- Anderson drilled a corner shot to the boards in the 18th minutes off assists from sophomore Megan Wetzel and Steenssens.
- Maine scored both of its goals in a span of under two minutes to quickly tie the game and then take the lead.
- Off a corner, Mallory Mackesy scored for the third straight game with assists from Poppy Lambert and Kristjana Walker at the 39:44 mark.
- With the score tied, Thomason made a pair of good saves for the Terriers but the Black Bears were able to take the lead in the 42nd minute.
- Saylor Kuefler gave Maine the lead when she scored her first collegiate goal off a tough angle on the endline.
- BU made it a 2-2 affair under two minutes later when Purcell collected a rebound off a corner shot on the left side and sent a reverse-stick shot to the back of the goal 1:03 left in the third quarter.
- Only one shot on goal was recorded in the fourth quarter as Thomason turned aside a penalty-corner bid by Lambert in the 53rd minute.
- In overtime, the Terriers quickly created a chance but freshman Nicole Lauro's shot resulted in the only save of the game for Maine netminder Jayde Temby.
- Maine had the first corner of the extra session but Thomason came up with a shot on an attempt from Mackesy.
- The Terriers responded with a corner of their own in the seventh minute of overtime but Anderson's ensuing shot was blocked.
- The winning goal came off a restart as Maine committed a foul in its offensive zone and Steenssens quickly got the ball all the way up the field to Preece, who received the pass at the top of the Maine zone and dribbled towards the right side before sliding a shot past Temby for the win.
GAME NOTES
- BU has now won two consecutive games against the Black Bears after a 5-2 home win last season.
- Each team earned four corners and Maine held an 11-8 edge in shots.
- The Terriers have scored four goals this season and they have come from four different players.

- The Terriers will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 2) when they face Ohio in a neutral-site contest at Maine.
