Field Hockey Falls at Monmouth, 4-0

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Boston University field hockey team ended a four-game road stretch with a 4-0 loss at Monmouth on Sunday afternoon at So Sweet A Cat Field.
After a scoreless first half, the Hawks broke through in the 39th minute when Lauren Welik scored goals 15 seconds apart. The home team added another goal a minute later and then Welik completed a hat-trick performance with just over a minute to play in regulation.
Senior Kate Thomason made nine saves in goal for the Terriers, who fall to 3-5 on the year. Monmouth improves to 6-3 with its fourth straight win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Terriers earned the first two corners of the game but the Monmouth defense came up with a stop each time.
- Thomason made two saves in the first quarter, including one with just 12 seconds left in the frame.
- BU was unable to generate any chances in the second quarter but held off the Hawks on the other end of the field to keep the game scoreless heading into the break.
- The Hawks came out of the half strong and broke through soon after.
- Welik opened the scoring when she converted from near the cage at 38:28 off a pass from Johanna Karlhuber.
- Just 15 seconds later, Welik notched her second tally to put her team up 2-0.
- Nora Goddard-Despot upped the Hawks' lead just over a minute later as the first three goals of the game were scored in a span of 1:18.
- BU looked strong in the fourth quarter, recording seven shots and earning five corners but Monmouth goalkeeper Jessie Eiselin and her defense were up to the task and sealed the shutout.
- Welk capped the scoring and her hat trick with a goal at 58:39.
GAME NOTES
- Monmouth held a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal.
- Eiselin made four saves in her shutout performance.
- The Hawks earned nine corners while the Terriers had seven on the day.
- This was the second-ever meeting between the two schools with BU taking the first in Boston back in 2021.
UP NEXT
- The Terriers will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 30) when they host Bucknell for their PL home opener.
- It will kick off a six-game homestand.
- Game time is set for 1 p.m.
