TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU played local rival Northeastern to a 1-1 draw back on Sunday (Aug. 18) at Nickerson Field.
- Junior midfielder Giulianna Gianino buried a free kick in the 36th minute for her third goal of the year. The Huskies would equalize on a penalty kick rebound in the second half.
- After scoring three goals in the first two matches, Gianino was named the Patriot League Midfielder of the Week for the week of Aug. 19. She was one of 18 Division I student-athletes to score at least three goals in the first four days of the regular season.
- With 31 career points, Gianino is three points away from a share of 24th place in the BU record books. Megan McGoldrick and Abigail McNulty occupy that spot with 34 points.
- Fourteen different Terriers have appeared in the starting XI so far in the early season.
- Gianino, graduate student Lily Matthews, seniors Celia Braun, Eileen Solomon, and Morgan Fagan, junior Mackenzie Stickelman, sophomore Samantha Aronson, and freshman Jaiden Schultz have started both games so far.
- The Terriers are one of 25 Division I programs that have generated at least 16 corner kicks on the year. Against Northeastern, BU sported an 11-0 advantage in that category.
- Thursday will be the first of three America East foes BU will face this season.
- The River Hawks lost their season lidlifter against Merrimack, 1-0, on Aug. 15.
- UMass Lowell was ranked fourth in the America East preseason poll, ahead of Vermont and just behind New Hampshire.
- Forward Calliste Brookshire was tabbed to the America East Preseason All-Conference Team after pacing the River Hawks with eight assists and 18 points in 2023.
- Brookshire and Hope Santaniello (eight points) are UMass Lowell's leading returning scorers. Taylor Burgess also returns after playing every minute in goal in 2023.
- Last year, UMass Lowell recorded a 5-6-7 record, going 3-2-3 in America East play to reach the conference championship game as the No. 4 seed.
- Thursday marks the fourth all-time meeting between BU and UMass Lowell.
- The series' first matchup took place in 1995, while the two sides squared off as fellow Division I programs in 2021.
- In two meetings since then, the Terriers are 1-0-1.
- The last meeting was a 2-1 BU victory on Aug. 25, 2022 in Lowell, Mass. Gianino scored in the eighth minute, and McNulty extended the lead in the 20th minute. Brookshire found the back of the net for the River Hawks with five seconds remaining in the match.
