Field Hockey Set to Host Massachusetts, Maine

The Boston University field hockey team enters a two-game home weekend, hosting Massachusetts on Friday (Sept. 13) before welcoming Maine on Sunday (Sept. 15).

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • The Terriers, who will be home for four of their next five games, are coming off a 3-2 shootout victory at Brown on Sunday.
  • Senior Katie Devine was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after scoring two goals against the Bears while also converting a shootout attempt.
  • Senior Payton Anderson recorded the decisive shootout goal and graduate student Kate Thomason stopped Brown's final attempt to seal the win. 
  • Devine has a team-best three goals after scoring just once over her first three seasons.
  • Sophomore Bella Bergner picked up her first collegiate point with an assist on Devine's first goal against the Bears.
  • Thomason combined for 16 saves last weekend and has a 2.82 goals-against average and a .733 save percentage this season.
  • BU is in its 47th season at the varsity level.
  • Anderson, junior Martu Coulo and sophomore Nicole Lauro were all named to the NFHCA Division I Watchlist.
  • Anderson and Coulo were named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team.
  • Anderson has 58 career points on the strength of 25 goals. 
SCOUTING MASSACHUSETTS
  • The Minutewomen are also 2-2 on the season and are coming off home wins against Dartmouth and Columbia after opening the year with losses to Maine and No. 1 Northwestern. 
  • Freshman Elani Sherwood is the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week after scoring three goals over the two-win weekend.
  • Senior Dempsey Campbell leads UMass in points (7) and is tied for the team lead in assists (3) with graduate student Clare Danahy.
  • Senior Hannah de Gast and junior goalkeeper Myrte van Herwijnen were named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • After a shutout against Dartmouth, van Herwijnen has a 2.20 goals-against average and a .667 save percentage for the season. 
  • The Minutewomen were pickeed second in the A-10 Field Hockey Preseason Poll, placing behind 2023 conference champion St. Joseph's.
BU-UMASS SERIES HISTORY
  • BU is 20-19-2 all-time against the Minutewomen. 
  • The teams last met in 2022 with UMass - ranked 20th at the time - earning a 3-1 home win. 
SCOUTING MAINE
  • Maine has reeled off four straight wins after opening the season with a loss to top-ranked Northwestern.
  • Most recently, the Black Bears earned a 2-0 home victory over Central Michigan on Sunday.
  • Junior Olivia Geniti (1g, 3a), classmate Kate Richardson (2g, 1a) and graduate student Victoria Tinghitella (2g, 1a) all share the team lead in points with five each.
  • Graduate student Rozárie Mrázová has seen the majority of time in goal this season and has a 0.91 goals-against average to go along with an .871 save percentage.
  • Maine was selected fourth in the America East Preseason Poll. 
BU-MAINE SERIES HISTORY
  • BU is 32-9 all-time against the Black Bears and has won the past two meetings, including a 3-2 overtime road win last season.
  • Six of the previous seven meetings have been decided by a single goal.

  • BU will open its Patriot League schedule next Friday (Sept. 20) when it visits Bucknell.
  • Game time in Lewisburg is set for 4 p.m.
