BOSTON - The Boston University field hockey team fell to visiting Massachusetts, 5-3, in a back-and-forth contest on Friday at New Balance Field.

Tegan Poerio added her first tally of the season to go along with an assist. Junior
Megan Wetzel recorded a pair of assists.
BU outshot UMass, 20-11, and held a 15-2 advantage in corners.Â
The Terriers move to 2-3 on the season while UMass, which got goals from five different players, improves to 3-2.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMass got on the board first when Elani Sherwood found Gabby Benkenstein in the middle of the circle in the 10th minute.
- BU appeared to tie the game in the 20th minute off a rebound but the play went under review and it was determined that the ball went off a UMass defender before the rebound attempt, resulting in a corner.
- The Terriers got the equalizer they were looking for on the latter of back-to-back corners in the 28th minute with Anderson scoring off a drag flick for her second goal of the season.
- The visitors were able to regain the lead before the half, however, with Dempsey Campbell drilling a shot to the boards from the right side following a lead pass from Sherwood at the 28:51 mark.
- Claire Danahy pushed the Minutewomen's lead to 3-1 when she deposited a deflected ball in front in the 36th minute.
- BU earned five straight corners and finally capitalized on the fifth with a hard shot by Anderson from the top of the circle that was slowed by a UMass stick before sliding past the goal line in the 41st minute to get BU within one at 3-2.
- UMass scored what would be a crucial goal in the closing seconds of the third quarter as Sherwood pounced on a ball before the Terriers could clear it away to make it 4-2.
- The Terriers held a 9-2 shot advantage in the final quarter but the Minutewomen were able to extend the lead with BU netminder Kate Thompson pulled in favor of an extra field player.
- Off one of its two corners in the game, UMass got a goal from Lorenzini with 2:07 to play to push the score to 5-2.
- Poerio capped the scoring when she batted in an elevated rebound off a corner shot by Anderson with 1:04 left in regulation.
GAME NOTES
- Graduate student Kate Thomason made four saves in goal for the Terriers.
- Myrte Van Herwijnen turned in an 11-save performance in goal for the Minutewomen.
- Lorenzini added a defensive save for the Minutewomen during the five straight corners by BU in the third quarter.Â
- Sophomore Bella Bergner picked up her second assist of the season.
- Anderson recorded six shots on goal for the Terriers.
