March 23, 2025 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - The No. 8/7 Boston University men's ice hockey team will travel to Toledo, Ohio, to face No. 9 Ohio State in the opening game of the 2025 NCAA Tournament, as announced Sunday afternoon on the NCAA selection show on ESPNU. The Terriers and Buckeyes will play on Thursday, March 27, at 2 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
BU, which will be looking to make its third straight trip to the Frozen Four in its 40th NCAA Tournament appearance, earned a No. 2 seed in the Toledo Regional and will face the third-seeded Buckeyes. Top-seeded Michigan State will play fourth-seeded Cornell in the regional's other semifinal on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. ET.
This will be the fourth all-time meeting between BU and Ohio State. The last time these two teams met was in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament, with BU besting the Buckeyes, 8-3, en route to claiming the program's fifth national title. The two teams first faced off on Dec. 28, 1973, in Jack Parker's second-ever game as head coach. That day, the Terriers defeated Ohio State, 6-5, at the RPI Invitational. BU also beat Ohio State, 3-2, on Dec. 27, 1998 in the opening round of the Mariucci Classic in Minnesota.
Ohio State enters the tournament with a 24-13-2 overall record. The Buckeyes took Michigan State to double overtime of Saturday's Big Ten Tournament title game before falling to the Spartans, 4-3. Former Northeastern standout Gunnarwolfe Fontaine leads Ohio State with 40 points on a team-best 17 goals and 23 assists. Riley Thompson (17g, 16a) and Davis Burnside (14g, 19a) are tied for second on the squad with 33 points while Aiden Hansen-Bukata paces the Buckeyes with 27 assists. Logan Terness (12-9-1) and Kristoffer Eberly (12-4-1) have split goaltending duties this season, with Terness starting each of the last five games. Terness owns a 2.27 GAA and a .925 save percentage while Eberly has a 2.28 GAA and a .915 save percentage.
The two winners from Thursday's contests will meet on Saturday (March 29) at either 4 or 6:30 p.m. ET for a spot in the Frozen Four. That game will be televised on ESPNU.
